Chapter 5 - The Video Claire Wanted
Sophie waited until her parents went downstairs.
Then she entered Claire’s unlocked dressing room and found the phone charging beside the bed.
She knew Claire’s passcode.
It was Sophie’s birthday.
The video of Margaret stood at the top of the gallery.
Claire had begun recording before Daniel opened the door.
The first seconds captured her voice.
“Make sure she gets angry.”
Daniel answered quietly.
“She won’t.”
“Then push harder. We need something usable.”
Sophie’s stomach tightened.
The rest showed Margaret holding the red gift while Daniel told her she was at the wrong house.
Margaret never shouted.
She never threatened anyone.
Even when Daniel closed the door, she remained calm.
Claire stopped recording only after Margaret walked away.
Sophie searched the messages between her parents.
A thread from three weeks earlier contained photographs of legal forms.
One document was titled PETITION FOR TEMPORARY FINANCIAL GUARDIANSHIP.
The subject was Margaret Hale.
Claire had written:
The attorney says we need examples of emotional instability and financial retaliation.
Daniel replied:
Christmas will give us both.
Another message followed.
Once the petition is filed, we can restore the transfers ourselves.
Sophie covered her mouth.
Her parents had expected Margaret to become upset.
They wanted video they could present as proof that she was unstable and used money to punish family members.
They planned to take control of the trust.
Sophie forwarded the conversation and video to her own email.
Then she called Margaret.
Her grandmother answered from a small hotel near the highway.
“Sophie?”
“Grandma, I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“I found something.”
Sophie began crying.
Margaret sat on the edge of the hotel bed and listened while her granddaughter described the guardianship petition.
For several seconds, Margaret could not speak.
Daniel had not merely rejected her.
He had designed the rejection as a trap.
Thomas had warned her once that Daniel confused assistance with ownership.
She had refused to believe him.
Now her son intended to declare her incompetent so he could control everything she and Thomas had built.
“Send the files to Samuel,” Margaret said.
“Are you mad at me?”
“No, sweetheart.”
“Will I have to leave school?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel and Claire had positioned Sophie as a shield.
They expected Margaret to resume payments rather than let her granddaughter suffer.
“You will not lose your education because of what they did.”
Sophie began to breathe again.
