Chapter 12 - The House of Borrowed Things

News of Daniel’s removal spread quickly.
Employees learned the company had been supported by Margaret’s trust.
Investors learned the commercial loan was under fraud review.
Claire’s friends learned the Christmas party had been charged to company accounts.
The image collapsed faster than the finances.
The mortgage lender demanded updated income documents.
Without Daniel’s salary and Margaret’s support, the couple did not qualify for refinancing.
The luxury SUV was leased through the company and had to be returned.
The private club suspended their membership for unpaid dues.
Claire blamed Daniel for misleading her.
“You said the company was profitable.”
“You saw the accounts.”
“I saw what you showed me.”
“You spent the money.”
“Because you told me we had it.”
Daniel pointed toward the empty driveway.
“You wanted everyone to think we were successful.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You wanted it more.”
Their arguments became frequent.
Sophie stayed with Margaret while family court evaluated the situation.
Margaret gave her the bedroom Daniel had used as a boy.
She did not criticize Sophie’s parents in front of her.
She did not ask her to choose sides.
She simply cooked breakfast and drove her to school.
On New Year’s Eve, Sophie noticed the red gift beneath Margaret’s tree.
“Is that what you brought on Christmas?”
Margaret nodded.
“You kept it?”
“It was yours.”
Sophie opened the box carefully.
The music box played the melody Thomas used to hum while working in his garage.
Inside the lid were the three sets of initials.
Sophie traced her father’s.
“Did he used to be different?”
Margaret sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“I kept solving problems he needed to learn from.”
“That isn’t all your fault.”
“No. His choices belong to him.”
Sophie leaned against her.
“Do you still love him?”
Margaret looked at Daniel’s initials carved between hers and Sophie’s.
“Yes.”
“Then why won’t you save him?”
“Because saving someone from every consequence can become another way of helping them stay lost.”
At midnight, they watched fireworks from the kitchen window.
Across town, Daniel and Claire sat inside a house filled with expensive furniture they could no longer afford.
Then the doorbell rang.

A bank investigator and two detectives stood outside.
👉 The company audit had uncovered more than false receipts—the forged guarantee carried evidence that Daniel and Claire had planned the fraud together.
