Chapter 9 - THE OLD MAN AT THE HEAD OF THE TABLE
Northstar Logistics held an emergency board meeting on Christmas morning.
Ryan expected to speak with a contract manager.
Instead, he entered the video conference and saw Arthur seated at the head of the table.
Behind him was the original Northstar emblem used when the company had only two trucks.
Ryan stared at the screen.
“What is this?”
Arthur wore the same plain sweater he had worn at the cottage.
Nothing about him looked powerful.
Then the corporate secretary began reading.
“Arthur Bennett, founder and trust protector of Northstar Logistics Holdings, has called this emergency session.”
Ryan stopped moving.
Vanessa appeared on another screen from her attorney’s office.
Margaret sat beside her own lawyer.
Arthur explained that the Northstar Logistics Trust retained controlling authority over vendor contracts, fraud investigations and protected family assets.
Ryan’s company had not grown because of luck.
Arthur had approved its first legitimate opportunity after the wedding.
He had also authorized the audit that discovered fraudulent invoices.
“You gave me the contract?” Ryan asked.
“I gave you a chance.”
“You watched me build everything.”
“I watched you steal from the company that trusted you.”
Vanessa interrupted.
She claimed all questionable invoices resulted from accounting errors.
The forensic audit displayed shell companies connected to her.
Margaret’s development firm had received more than one million dollars.
Ryan had taken the rest through bonuses and private transfers.
The Northstar board terminated Keller Freight Solutions immediately and referred the records to federal investigators.
The loans secured by future Northstar revenue entered default.
Ryan’s company became insolvent before the meeting ended.
He looked toward Arthur.
“You planned this.”
“No. You made choices. I preserved the record.”
Ryan threatened to expose Arthur for using corporate power in a family dispute.
Arthur’s voice remained calm.
“The child-endangerment case belongs to civilian authorities. The contract fraud belongs to Northstar. The property belongs to Emily’s trust. You created three separate crimes and assumed one lie would cover them all.”
The board approved recovery actions.
Accounts were frozen.
Payments to Margaret’s companies stopped.
Vanessa’s access to financial systems was revoked.
Then Arthur opened the sealed family schedule attached to the Northstar trust.
Ryan had never seen it.
It stated that Emily was not merely the future beneficiary of Hawthorne House.
Upon the birth of Grace’s first grandchild, a second level of the trust became active.
Lily’s birth had changed ownership rights.
But not in the way Ryan expected.
No spouse could control those assets.
The child’s arrival transferred additional Northstar shares directly into an independent maternal line trust protected for Emily and Lily.
