Chapter 16 - THE MOTHER THEY CALLED UNSTABLE
Ryan’s attorney began with Emily’s postpartum medical history.
He asked about crying spells.
Sleeplessness.
Fear that Lily might stop breathing.
Moments when Emily felt overwhelmed.
Emily answered honestly.
“Yes, I was exhausted.”
“Yes, I was afraid.”
“Yes, I needed support.”
The attorney leaned closer.
“Is it possible your perception of Christmas Eve was affected by postpartum anxiety?”
Emily looked toward the jury.
“My perception did not create the doorbell video.”
He asked why she walked through a blizzard rather than call emergency services.
“Ryan had controlled my phone account. I did not know whether he could track or disable it. My father’s cottage was the closest light.”
“Could you have returned to the house?”
“The door was locked.”
“Ryan says you could return after calming down.”
“My newborn daughter was turning blue.”
The attorney displayed the altered therapy note.
The prosecutor introduced the original.
The therapist testified that Margaret paid her and repeatedly requested language supporting incapacity.
Dr. Brooks described Lily’s hypothermia.
“If Arthur Bennett had opened the door fifteen minutes later,” she said, “the outcome could have been catastrophic.”
The caregiver testified.
Northstar auditors explained the financial motive.
Paul Danner described selling trust information to Margaret before Ryan met Emily.
Vanessa testified that Ryan’s courtship was planned.
Ryan’s attorney called her a jealous former lover seeking leniency.
Vanessa answered, “I am guilty. That does not make his messages disappear.”
Arthur testified last.
The defense asked why he concealed his control of Northstar.
“Privacy.”
“Was it a test for anyone who married your daughter?”
“No. I did not expect anyone to need her bank statement before deciding whether to treat her like a human being.”
“Did you give Ryan’s company a contract?”
“I allowed it to compete.”
“Then withdrew it after a family dispute?”
“After an audit found fraud.”
The attorney suggested Arthur used corporate power to punish Ryan.
Arthur listed each independent process.
Northstar terminated a fraudulent vendor.
Civilian police investigated child endangerment.
Family court protected Lily.
The trust enforced Grace’s written terms.
“No one institution did everything,” Arthur said. “Ryan simply broke rules in every place he entered.”
Then prosecutors played the nursery video.
Ryan’s voice filled the courtroom.
She goes wherever unstable mothers go.
Emily watched the jury.
No one looked at her as unstable.
