Chapter 7 - THE FILE EMILY SENT BEFORE THE STORM

Emily did not confront Ryan with the messages.

She sent every photograph to Rachel Shaw.

Then she called Arthur.

This time, she spoke clearly.

“I need help.”

Arthur stood up so quickly his chair fell backward.

“Where are you?”

“In the upstairs bathroom.”

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes.”

“Can you leave safely?”

Emily looked through the window.

Snow had begun covering the private road between Hawthorne House and Arthur’s cottage.

Ryan’s car remained outside.

Margaret was downstairs.

Vanessa was in the office.

“I don’t know.”

Arthur wanted to come immediately.

Rachel advised him to wait until civilian officers could accompany him.

The forged documents, altered medical records and custody plan required careful preservation.

Emily agreed to lock the bedroom door and keep Lily with her.

Then the baby began crying.

Margaret knocked.

“Open the door.”

Emily remained silent.

Ryan arrived minutes later.

“Emily, we need to talk.”

She started recording.

Ryan told her the family was worried.

He asked her to attend a private treatment center after Christmas.

Margaret said Lily would remain with Ryan during evaluation.

Emily refused.

Ryan’s voice hardened.

“You are proving our point.”

“I’m not leaving my baby.”

“Then sign the temporary guardianship.”

“No.”

Margaret pushed the door open with a key.

Vanessa entered behind them carrying a suitcase.

Emily realized it was already packed with her clothes.

Ryan placed the papers on the bed.

“Sign, go to treatment and come back when you’re stable.”

“I am stable.”

“You accused me of sleeping with Vanessa.”

“I saw the messages.”

Ryan looked toward Vanessa.

Margaret’s expression became cold.

“You searched private devices?”

Emily lifted her phone.

“I sent everything to my attorney.”

For the first time, Ryan panicked.

He tried to take the phone.

Emily moved away while holding Lily.

The argument escalated.

Margaret opened the front door downstairs.

Wind and snow entered the hall.

Ryan dragged Emily’s suitcase toward the porch.

“You want to behave like a stranger?” he shouted. “Then leave.”

Emily stared at him.

“You cannot put a newborn into that storm.”

Margaret threw the diaper bag outside.

Vanessa watched from the staircase in the red robe.

Ryan told Emily she could return when she signed the guardianship and withdrew her accusations.

Then he pushed her across the threshold and locked the door.

The doorbell camera recorded everything.

Emily stood in the snow holding Lily.

The cottage lights glowed through the trees at the edge of the estate.

She began walking toward her father.

👉 Ryan believed the blizzard would force Emily to return and surrender—but every step toward Arthur’s cottage carried the evidence that would take the house away from him instead.
