Chapter 8 - THE BABY BESIDE THE FIRE
Dr. Lena Brooks arrived at Arthur’s cottage before the ambulance.
She removed Lily’s wet clothes and wrapped her in warmed blankets.
The baby’s temperature was dangerously low.
Emily kept apologizing.
“I should have covered her better.”
“You protected her with your own body,” Lena said. “That is why she is breathing.”
Paramedics transported both mother and child to the hospital.
Lily required overnight observation but showed no sign of permanent injury.
Emily was treated for hypothermia, dehydration and postpartum complications.
Arthur remained beside her.
He did not ask why she stayed.
He did not demand every detail while she was exhausted.
He said only, “You and Lily are safe tonight.”
Ryan called repeatedly.
When Arthur finally answered, Ryan changed his tone.
He claimed Emily had stormed out during an emotional episode.
He said she refused treatment.
He accused Arthur of kidnapping his wife and child.
Arthur listened without interruption.
Then he asked, “Did you lock the door?”
Ryan paused.
“She was dangerous.”
“Did you place a newborn outside in a blizzard?”
“She chose to leave.”
“The camera shows your mother throwing the diaper bag.”
Ryan went silent.
Arthur continued.
“Your contract with Northstar Logistics is suspended pending investigation.”
“What does Northstar have to do with this?”
Arthur looked through the hospital window at Emily holding Lily.
“More than you understand.”
Rachel filed for an emergency protection order and exclusive occupancy of Hawthorne House.
The doorbell footage, Emily’s recording and Lily’s medical report supported immediate action.
Ryan, Margaret and Vanessa were ordered to remain away from Emily and the child.
Ryan argued that Hawthorne House was the marital residence.
Rachel produced the trust deed.
The property belonged solely to Emily’s protected trust.
Ryan had no ownership interest.
Officers escorted all three from the house before sunrise.
Margaret screamed that Arthur had manipulated his daughter.
Vanessa removed the red robe before cameras arrived.
Ryan demanded to know how an old man in a cottage could suspend a Northstar contract.
No one answered.
As officers searched the home office, they found the forged deed, guardianship petition and altered medical notes.
They also found a large red envelope labeled:
CHRISTMAS TRANSFER — FINAL SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
Inside was a loan agreement pledging Hawthorne House for twelve million dollars.
The lender had already approved it.
The signature deadline was noon on Christmas Day.
