Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE RED ROBE
Emily first saw Vanessa leaving Ryan’s bedroom at 4:00 a.m.
Vanessa wore a red robe Emily had received as a wedding gift.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Vanessa said Ryan had suffered a panic attack during a late business call.
Emily looked toward the bedroom.
Ryan appeared behind her without a shirt.
“You’re imagining something that didn’t happen.”
“Why is she wearing my robe?”
Margaret emerged from the guest wing.
She did not look surprised.
“Vanessa spilled coffee on her blouse.”
“At four in the morning?”
“Lower your voice,” Margaret said. “You’ll wake Lily.”
Emily turned toward Ryan.
“Tell her to leave.”
Ryan crossed his arms.
“Vanessa is protecting the company while I care for you.”
“I don’t need her here.”
“That is not your decision alone.”
“It’s my house.”
The sentence changed the room.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
Ryan stepped closer.
“No one said it wasn’t.”
“You all act as if I’m a guest.”
“You barely leave the bedroom.”
“I gave birth three weeks ago.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“That does not excuse hostility.”
Emily ordered her out again.
Ryan refused.
When Emily reached for Vanessa’s suitcase, Margaret grabbed Lily from the bassinet.
Emily froze.
“Give me my baby.”
“You are agitated,” Margaret said.
Ryan began recording with his phone.
Emily understood instantly.
They wanted her angry on camera.
She lowered her voice.
“Please give Lily back.”
Margaret continued holding the child.
Ryan narrated.
“Emily is becoming aggressive after accusing Vanessa without evidence.”
Vanessa stood beside him wearing Emily’s robe.
The cruelty was so deliberate that Emily stopped crying.
She looked into Ryan’s camera.
“This is my child. This is my house. Your mother is refusing to return my baby.”
Ryan ended the recording.
The clip did not support the story he wanted.
Margaret returned Lily.
That evening, Emily searched the home office.
She found the capacity folder, altered therapy notes and an unsigned property deed transferring Hawthorne House into a company named Winterfield Development.
Margaret controlled that company.
Attached was a guardianship petition stating Ryan should manage Lily’s future inheritance because Emily was mentally unstable.
Emily photographed every page.
Then she found a second phone hidden behind the printer.
Messages between Ryan and Vanessa proved their affair.
One message from Ryan read:
Once Emily is removed, you can move into the main suite.
Vanessa answered:
May you like
Margaret says Christmas is the cleanest time. Everyone believes family stress makes unstable women break.
👉 Emily finally understood that the Christmas plan was not to frighten her—it was to remove her, keep Lily and make the theft look like a medical necessity.
