Chapter 4 - THE PREGNANCY THEY TURNED INTO A WEAPON

Emily’s pregnancy became difficult during the seventh month.

She developed high blood pressure and was ordered to reduce stress.

Margaret immediately took control.

She canceled Emily’s volunteer work.

Answered calls from Arthur.

Insisted Ryan manage all household bills.

She described each restriction as medical care.

Emily felt grateful at first.

Then she realized her phone was no longer where she left it.

Messages disappeared.

Appointments changed.

Arthur arrived twice after receiving no answer, only to be told Emily was sleeping.

Ryan began accompanying Emily to every medical visit.

He answered questions before she could.

When a nurse asked whether Emily felt safe at home, Ryan laughed.

“She worries about everything now.”

Emily said nothing.

She had no bruises.

Ryan had never struck her.

His control looked like concern.

That made it harder to explain.

One evening, Emily discovered a printed email beside the nursery computer.

Ryan had asked an estate consultant whether a husband could become temporary guardian of marital property if his wife suffered postpartum psychiatric symptoms.

The consultant answered that a court might grant limited authority if the mother posed a danger to herself or the child.

Emily confronted him.

Ryan did not apologize.

“I’m preparing for possibilities.”

“You’re preparing to declare me unstable.”

“You’ve been emotional for months.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“That’s exactly the problem.”

Margaret entered before the argument ended.

She accused Emily of attacking Ryan for protecting the baby.

“You have no idea how frightening you’ve become,” she said.

Emily stared at her.

“What have I done?”

Margaret listed ordinary moments.

Emily cried after a painful appointment.

She forgot to turn off the stove.

She woke Ryan because she could not feel the baby moving.

Every normal fear had been rewritten as evidence.

That night, Emily called Arthur from the bathroom.

She told him she was tired but did not explain everything.

She feared he would confront Ryan and make matters worse.

Arthur listened to the silence between her words.

“Do you want me to come?”

“No.”

“Is that your answer, or the answer you think keeps everyone calm?”

Emily’s eyes filled.

Before she could respond, Ryan knocked on the door.

“Who are you talking to?”

Emily ended the call.

Arthur stared at his silent phone.

For the first time, he asked Northstar’s internal security team to review Ryan’s business relationship with the company.
