Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Felt Deceived

Grant confronted Emily inside his home office.
A copy of the trust summary lay on the desk.
“Hart Industrial Systems.”
Emily stopped in the doorway.
“Where did you get that?”
“Your father owns it.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe he repaired cars.”
“He does repair cars.”
“He owns factories.”
“Yes.”
“He financed Mercer Properties.”
“The fund made an independent investment.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“You watched my family beg lenders while your father controlled the answer.”
“I helped create the proposal that saved you.”
“You tested me.”
“No.”
“You wanted to see whether I respected a poor family.”
Emily looked at him.
“And did you?”
His expression hardened.
“This is about your deception.”
“You never asked what my father’s company did.”
“You knew what I assumed.”
“You enjoyed treating him like staff.”
Grant struck the desk.
“You humiliated me.”
“No one knew.”
“I know.”
That was enough.
Grant’s anger came from discovering he had looked down on someone more powerful than he was.
Not from financial secrecy.
Not from marital trust.
From wounded pride.
Vivian entered carrying wine.
She already knew.
“Emily has always enjoyed feeling superior,” she said.
Emily turned.
“You paid someone for these records.”
Vivian ignored the accusation.
Charles joined them.
The three Mercers spoke as one family.
Emily had concealed material assets.
Emily had benefited from Mercer’s name while secretly controlling its lender.
Emily owed them cooperation.
Grant placed a new power-of-attorney draft on the desk.
“It allows me to manage only transactions connected to Mercer Properties.”
“It gives you authority over every trust distribution.”
“Temporarily.”
“No.”
Vivian poured a glass.
“Your father manipulated this marriage from the beginning.”
“My father stayed away because I asked him to.”
“Then prove your loyalty to Grant.”
Emily pushed the document back.
“No.”
Grant followed her into the hallway.
He caught her arm.
“Do not walk away.”
“Let go.”
“You are my wife.”
“That sentence does not answer me.”
He released her, leaving finger marks.
Hours later, he apologized.
He blamed shock.
He said he felt foolish.
He promised never to touch her again.
Emily photographed the bruise.
She did not send it to Daniel.
She still believed involving her father would prove Grant’s accusation that he controlled her life.
Grant understood that pride.

Vivian taught him how to use it.
👉 The first bruise disappeared beneath Emily’s sleeve, while the Mercer family began building a medical story that would make every future refusal look like mental illness.
