Chapter 17 - Back at Bay Three

Emily returned to Hart Motor Works on a Saturday morning.
Daniel was beneath a vintage truck.
Only his boots were visible.
She tapped one shoe.
“Do you still charge family for labor?”
Daniel rolled out.
“You’re family. I charge double.”
Emily laughed for the first time in weeks.
The sound surprised both of them.
A half-restored engine sat on a nearby stand.
It belonged to the roadster Emily had worked on the day she met Grant.
Daniel had kept it.
“I thought we could finish it,” he said.
Emily touched the cold metal.
“For years, I avoided this place because Grant treated it like proof that I came from nothing.”
Daniel wiped his hands.
“You came from oil stains and bad coffee.”
“And patents.”
“And your mother correcting every invoice I prepared.”
Emily smiled.
They began working together.
At first, the garage sounds made her tense.
A dropped tool resembled a locked door.
A raised voice from the front office made her body freeze.
Daniel noticed.
He never grabbed her shoulder unexpectedly.
He asked before standing behind her.
He left exits open.
Healing entered through ordinary details.
Emily also began working with Helen to review the trust.
She removed unnecessary family restrictions.
Created independent safeguards.
Established procedures preventing any future spouse or relative from gaining emergency authority through an unverified medical claim.
Daniel signed every change without argument.
“You’re not worried I’ll make mistakes?” Emily asked.
“You will.”
She looked at him.
“So will I,” he continued. “Freedom includes making choices other people would not make.”
That answer repaired something old.
Emily sold several passive investments and used the proceeds to launch Hart Safe Systems, a company designing secure consent technology for banks, hospitals and trust administrators.
The system required private live verification for high-risk documents.
No spouse hovering outside the camera.
No family member answering questions.
No approval while sedated or threatened.
The first prototype was built inside Bay Three.
Daniel helped with the hardware.
Emily designed the security process.
They named it Rose Protocol after her mother.
The system’s first test stopped a fraudulent power of attorney submitted by an adult child against an elderly parent.
Emily stared at the alert.

One refusal had protected a stranger.
👉 The room where Emily once cleaned tools became the birthplace of technology designed to make sure no family could steal consent behind a locked door again.
