Chapter 15 - Emily Took the Stand
The criminal trial began nine months later.
Emily entered the courtroom wearing a dark green suit.
Grant sat beside his attorneys.
Vivian and Charles faced separate charges but appeared in the same proceeding for the conspiracy evidence.
The prosecutor began with the simplest fact.
“Did you freely agree to transfer your trust?”
“No.”
“Did you freely grant your husband power of attorney?”
“No.”
“Were you permitted to leave the mansion?”
“No.”
Emily described the false psychiatric session.
The locked room.
The drugged water.
The belt.
The forced pen.
Then Daniel’s arrival.
“What did your husband say when your father entered?” the prosecutor asked.
“He said I had a panic attack.”
“Was that true?”
“I was terrified. But terror caused by being held against your will is not a medical explanation for the people holding you.”
During cross-examination, Grant’s attorney focused on Emily’s hidden wealth.
“You allowed Mr. Mercer to believe your father was a mechanic.”
“My father is a mechanic.”
“He is also a billionaire industrialist.”
“Yes.”
“You concealed that.”
“I kept my family finances private.”
“You allowed Grant to feel inferior.”
Emily looked toward her husband.
“I never asked him to treat workers, my father or me as inferior.”
The attorney displayed early emails in which Emily offered to help Mercer Properties.
“You involved the Hart investment fund.”
“I introduced a viable restructuring plan.”
“Without disclosing your personal connection.”
“The fund’s board made the decision independently.”
“Did you test Grant’s character?”
“No. But he revealed it.”
The attorney asked why Emily returned to the mansion after learning about the false medical letter.
“I wanted the original documents.”
“You knowingly placed yourself in danger?”
“I underestimated how far they would go.”
“So your father’s rescue was planned?”
“My emergency call was planned. The violence was not.”
The prosecutor played the backup footage.
Vivian discussing medication.
Grant copying Emily’s biometric access.
Charles testing the lock.
No defense question could undo it.
Daniel testified next.
Grant’s attorney tried to portray him as a wealthy father seizing a competitor.
Daniel brought photographs of himself rebuilding engines at Hart Motor Works.
“I do not need Mercer Properties,” he said. “I needed my daughter alive.”
The jury deliberated for twelve hours.
Grant was convicted of unlawful imprisonment, coercion, assault, identity fraud, conspiracy and attempted financial exploitation.
