Chapter 1 - The Ambulance Outside

“She’s not leaving.”

Vivian Mercer spoke calmly as though the bruised woman crawling across the polished floor were an unreasonable guest.

Emily reached toward the phone lying several feet away.

One side of her face was swollen. Her lower lip was split. Her fingers shook so violently that she could barely lift herself from the wood.

Behind her, Grant held a black leather belt.

His parents, Vivian and Charles, stood near the fireplace watching him as though everything happening inside the white Bel Air mansion had already been agreed upon.

The front door burst open.

Daniel Hart stopped on the threshold.

For half a second, he could not move.

Then he saw his daughter.

“Emily.”

Grant lowered the belt.

Vivian stepped between Daniel and the living room.

“She had another panic attack. You should leave before you make it worse.”

Daniel walked past her without touching anyone.

He dropped beside Emily and supported her shoulder with one hand.

With the other, he opened the camera on his phone.

He aimed it toward Grant.

“What happened?”

Emily tried to speak.

Only a broken breath came out.

She pointed toward a glass overturned beside the coffee table.

A colorless liquid had spread across the rug.

Three documents lay open on a nearby chair.

POWER OF ATTORNEY.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION.

EMILY HART FAMILY TRUST.

Grant moved closer.

“She became hysterical after refusing her medication.”

Emily gripped Daniel’s sleeve.

“Don’t drink anything.”

Daniel looked at the glass.

Then at the faint powder clinging to its rim.

His expression changed from terror to cold concentration.

He rose without stopping the recording.

Grant pointed toward the documents.

“She has to sign before she hurts herself or destroys the company.”

Daniel lifted the phone higher.

“Say that again.”

Grant realized too late that his own voice was being uploaded.

Blue and red light began sweeping through the glass windows.

Vivian turned toward the driveway.

Charles went pale.

Grant stared at Daniel’s screen.

RECORDING UPLOADED.

Daniel placed himself between Emily and the Mercer family.

“The ambulance is outside.”

Paramedics and police officers ran up the front steps.

Grant’s grip loosened around the belt.

But the attempted signatures were only part of the plan.
