Chapter 9 - ARTHUR’S MISSING FILE
Lorraine’s assistant placed the lockbox inside the study closet.
Police waited until she left.
Detective Brooks opened it under the search warrant.
The contents had been missing for three years.
Arthur’s handwritten investigation notes.
Invoices connecting Lorraine and Daniel to fraudulent supplier payments.
A flash drive containing security footage from Hale Meridian.
And Arthur’s bloodstained watch.
Claire nearly collapsed when she saw the photograph.
The watch had never been recovered from the lake.
Lorraine had kept it.
The flash drive contained a video recorded one week before Arthur’s death.
Arthur confronted Daniel inside Hale Meridian headquarters.
“You and your mother created false vendor accounts.”
Daniel denied it.
Arthur showed him bank records.
“You will return the money, resign, and cooperate with investigators.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“If this becomes public, my mother loses everything.”
“That was her choice.”
“What about Claire?”
Arthur stepped closer.
“You will stay away from my daughter.”
The recording ended.
Daniel had known Claire before the funeral.
He had known exactly who she was.
He approached her after Arthur’s death because marrying her was the only way to recover what Arthur had taken from him.
Detective Brooks found another item in the box.
A small voice recorder.
The battery was dead, but forensic technicians recovered the audio.
Wind roared across the lake.
Arthur’s breathing sounded strained.
Then his voice whispered:
“Lorraine’s car. Daniel is with her.”
A second voice shouted in the distance.
Daniel.
“Find the file!”
Arthur had survived the boat explosion, reached shore, and activated the recorder.
The final minutes captured footsteps, Lorraine’s voice, and a blow.
The recording ended.
Claire listened once.
She could not bear a second time.
Rachel held her while guests gathered outside for the ceremony.
The evidence was enough to arrest Daniel and Lorraine immediately.
Detective Brooks offered to end the operation.
Claire looked toward the garden.
Daniel’s accomplices believed she still knew nothing.
The marked signature packet remained in his possession.
The wedding guests included Hale Meridian directors and investors whom Daniel intended to deceive.
Claire wanted the truth delivered where the lie had been designed to succeed.
“Let the ceremony begin.”
Rachel searched her face.
“You do not have to prove strength by walking out there.”
“I’m not doing it to prove strength.”
“Then why?”
“Because my father was silenced alone at the lake.”
Claire lifted her veil.
“They wanted a crowd to pressure me. They are going to get a crowd that hears him.”
The evidence was transferred to Detective Brooks’s team.
Officers moved into position.
The orchestra began playing.
Daniel stood beneath the flower arch smiling at the guests.
He believed Claire was walking toward him to become his wife.
