Chapter 6 - THE SENTENCE LORRAINE COULD NOT TAKE BACK
The second study meeting occurred six days before the wedding.
Detective Brooks listened from a surveillance van outside the estate.
Claire sat beside Rachel in a locked bedroom upstairs.
On the recording, Daniel paced.
“The dock contractor is asking questions.”
Lorraine answered, “Then pay him.”
“He wants cash.”
“Give him cash.”
Tessa asked whether the old boat should be used.
Lorraine rejected the idea.
“The fire damage would look too similar.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“What happened with Arthur was supposed to end in the water.”
Claire gripped the edge of her chair.
Lorraine replied, “It would have if he had not reached the road.”
Tessa stopped moving.
The microphone picked up the rustle of fabric.
“You told me he drowned,” she said.
“He did eventually.”
Daniel said, “Mother.”
Lorraine continued as though correcting a child.
“Arthur crawled out near the service road. He saw the car. We had no choice.”
Claire made a sound that did not feel human.
Rachel wrapped both arms around her.
On the audio, Tessa asked, “What did you do?”
No one answered for several seconds.
Then Daniel said, “You don’t need details.”
The meeting ended abruptly.
Detective Brooks entered the bedroom upstairs.
“We can arrest them now.”
Claire wiped her face.
“Will that prove Daniel was there?”
“The recording strongly suggests knowledge.”
“But Lorraine could claim she acted alone.”
Brooks understood.
Claire wanted the whole truth.
Investigators traced the dock contractor.
His real name was Mason Pike.
He was not licensed.
He had previously worked for Daniel’s crisis-management firm.
Police followed him to the lake house.
They found him tampering with the fuel system on a newer boat.
He was arrested quietly.
Pike immediately asked for an attorney.
When shown the study recording, he offered cooperation.
Daniel had hired him to create a delayed fuel leak.
The boat would run normally for twenty minutes.
Then fumes would collect beneath the engine cover.
A spark would ignite them.
Daniel planned to leave Claire alone on the boat while claiming he had forgotten something at the house.
Pike also revealed that Lorraine had hired him three years earlier.
Arthur’s boat explosion was his first job for her.
He cut a fuel line and disabled the emergency radio.
He did not know Arthur escaped the water.
Lorraine later told him the job was complete.
Pike had retained old text messages because Lorraine never paid him fully.
One message came from Daniel’s number.
Make sure Hale cannot call shore.
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel had not merely learned about her father’s murder later.
He helped arrange it.
The prosecutor approved arrest warrants.
Claire asked that the arrests occur at the wedding.
Brooks questioned whether that was necessary.
Claire looked toward the dress hanging beside the window.
“They built the wedding into the crime. They expect the guests to become pressure against me.”
Rachel understood first.
Claire wanted every person they planned to manipulate to hear the truth.
The operation was changed.
Police would remain hidden until Daniel presented the signature packet.
Claire would record the encounter.
The ceremony would proceed only long enough to gather the conspirators in one place.
