Chapter 14 - CLAIRE TOOK THE STAND
The prosecutor began with simple questions.
Claire’s name.
Her role at Hale Meridian.
Her relationship to Arthur.
Then the questions moved toward Daniel.
Claire described meeting him after the funeral.
She described his kindness.
She described taking him to the lake house and telling him details she had shared with almost no one.
Daniel watched from the defense table.
His face remained controlled.
The prosecutor asked about the signature packets.
Claire explained each version.
The household trust.
The expense authorization.
The ceremonial unity document.
All contained the same hidden transfer.
“Why did you continue with the wedding after learning this?”
“To preserve evidence and prevent them from destroying what connected them to my father.”
The defense attorney stood.
“You could have canceled at any moment.”
“Yes.”
“But you wanted a dramatic public confrontation.”
“No. They wanted a public audience. I allowed that audience to hear what they intended to support.”
The attorney suggested Claire had manipulated the recording system.
“I activated microphones in my own home after discovering unauthorized meetings in my father’s private study.”
“You recorded your fiancé without his knowledge.”
“He discussed killing me without my knowledge.”
The judge ordered the attorney to move on.
The defense presented photographs of Claire and Daniel laughing at vacations, charity events, and family dinners.
“Did my client appear to love you here?”
Claire looked at an image taken on Arthur’s dock.
“I believed he did.”
“Is it possible he truly loved you despite making financial mistakes?”
“A financial mistake is entering the wrong number. He arranged a boat fire.”
Daniel looked down.
The attorney asked why Claire never suspected him earlier.
She answered honestly.
“Because he built trust before he asked me to ignore danger.”
The courtroom became silent.
Next, Arthur’s recording played.
Claire heard her father identify Lorraine’s car and Daniel’s presence.
She kept her eyes open.
Daniel finally turned toward her.
For one second, his expression resembled the man she thought she knew.
Then the prosecutor played his message to Pike.
Make sure Hale cannot call shore.
The resemblance disappeared.
Tessa testified after Claire.
She admitted she was paid to manipulate access and paperwork.
She described Daniel’s threat when she tried to withdraw.
Mason Pike explained the boat sabotage.
The retired deputy admitted Daniel paid him through a crisis-management account.
Lorraine testified against legal advice.
She blamed Arthur, Claire, Daniel, Tessa, and Pike.
She accepted nothing.
Daniel did not testify.
The jury received the case after four weeks.
Claire waited in Arthur’s former conference room at Hale Meridian.
She did not return to the wedding garden.
Not yet.
