Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE WHERE ARTHUR DIED
The Hale lake house stood two hours north of the city.
Arthur built it when Claire was a child.
It was not a palace.
It had cedar walls, a stone fireplace, and a long dock extending into deep water.
After Arthur’s death, Claire rarely visited.
Daniel suggested spending their wedding night there.
“The honeymoon flight leaves Monday,” he said. “We could have two quiet days by the lake first.”
Claire felt uneasy.
“My father died there.”
“That’s why we should reclaim it.”
The words sounded thoughtful.
The timing did not.
Tessa had already arranged a car to drive them there after the reception.
Daniel ordered champagne, flowers, and a private boat tour for the following morning.
Claire had not approved any of it.
She asked Rachel to review the property records.
Arthur had placed the lake house inside a separate trust.
If Claire died without children, ownership would pass to the Arthur Hale Foundation.
If Claire married and died afterward, her spouse would receive temporary occupancy but not ownership.
Daniel could not sell it.
However, the trust contained a hidden provision.
If Claire voluntarily transferred her voting shares to a spouse, control of the foundation’s board could also shift.
The documents Daniel wanted her to sign would give him indirect control over the lake house, the foundation, and Hale Meridian.
The plan was larger than a single property.
Rachel requested the original report from Arthur’s boat accident.
Several photographs were missing.
A mechanic’s statement referenced a damaged fuel line, but the final report described an electrical fire.
The mechanic had died the previous year.
The deputy who closed the case had retired suddenly.
Claire contacted Detective Brooks, who had recently joined the county’s financial-crimes unit after years in major crimes.
Brooks agreed to review the file quietly.
She found that Lorraine had visited the lake house four days before Arthur died.
Lorraine was not part of the Hale family then.
She worked as a private financial consultant for one of Arthur’s suppliers.
Arthur had terminated the supplier’s contract after discovering inflated invoices.
Daniel also worked for that supplier.
Claire’s hands turned cold.
Daniel had always said their first connection was after Arthur’s death.
In reality, his company had been under investigation by Arthur months earlier.
A visitor log showed Daniel entering Hale Meridian headquarters twice.
He had met Arthur.
He had lied from the day Claire met him.
Detective Brooks located an old security still from the lake road.
A dark SUV passed the camera forty minutes before the explosion.
The registration was unreadable.
But a silver emblem hung from the rearview mirror.
Lorraine kept an identical emblem in her current vehicle.
It was a medal from Daniel’s late father.
Claire confronted neither of them.
Instead, she agreed to spend the wedding weekend at the lake house.
Daniel appeared relieved.
That same night, he texted Tessa:
She agreed. Keep the dock schedule unchanged.
