Chapter 15 - THE VERDICT AFTER THE VOWS
Daniel and Lorraine stood separately when the jury entered.
Claire sat beside Rachel.
Tessa and Pike had already entered guilty pleas.
The clerk read Lorraine’s verdicts first.
Conspiracy to commit murder.
Guilty.
Murder of Arthur Hale.
Guilty.
Attempted murder of Claire Hale.
Guilty.
Financial fraud.
Guilty.
Forgery.
Guilty.
Witness tampering.
Guilty.
Lorraine showed no visible reaction until the final count.
Then she looked at Claire and whispered, “You were never strong enough to build what your father built.”
Claire did not answer.
Daniel’s verdicts followed.
Murder of Arthur Hale.
Guilty.
Conspiracy to murder Claire Hale.
Guilty.
Attempted theft of company shares.
Guilty.
Fraud.
Guilty.
Forgery.
Guilty.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The man who once expected the entire garden to watch Claire become his wife now stood before a courtroom that knew exactly why he chose her.
At sentencing, Claire was allowed to speak.
She placed Arthur’s letter on the podium.
“My father died because he refused to let them steal from people who trusted him.”
Her voice shook.
She continued.
“Daniel entered my life after helping take my father out of it. He listened to my grief so he could learn what evidence remained. He called control protection. He called forged documents marriage planning. He called a planned fire an accident.”
Daniel stared at the table.
Claire looked toward him.
“You asked what I recorded at the wedding. I recorded the moment you stopped being able to rewrite what happened.”
She turned toward the judge.
“I am not asking for punishment because my wedding was destroyed. A wedding can be canceled. A dress can be stored. Flowers die.”
She touched Arthur’s letter.
“I am asking for justice because they treated human lives as obstacles between themselves and ownership.”
Lorraine received life imprisonment with no possibility of early release for decades.
Daniel received a lengthy sentence that would keep him imprisoned through most of his adult life.
The retired deputy, false physician, and estate attorney received separate sentences.
Pike received a reduced but substantial sentence for cooperation.
Tessa lost her business, professional licenses, and freedom for several years.
Every conspirator was ordered to pay restitution.
The assets recovered from Lorraine covered most of the employee losses caused by the supplier scheme.
Outside court, reporters asked Claire whether she regretted not arresting Daniel before the wedding.
She considered the question.
“I regret that my father was not believed while he was alive.”
Then she added, “I do not regret making sure the truth could not be hidden again.”
She left the courthouse without Daniel’s ring.
Without Lorraine’s approval.
Without the life they designed for her.
The company and estate were secure.

But the lake house remained locked, holding the last place Claire remembered feeling safe with both Arthur and Daniel.
