Daniel’s criminal trial began eighteen months after the divorce hearing.
Evelyn entered through a private corridor.
This time, Mara Chen walked beside her as victim’s counsel.

“Appearance was one of the things he controlled.”
The attorney displayed a vacation photograph.
Daniel’s hand rested around Evelyn’s waist.
“You look happy.”
“The photograph was taken three days after he fractured my ribs.”
The courtroom went silent.
The prosecutor later asked whether every scar came from Daniel.
“Every scar shown in divorce court was documented by a medical professional or contemporaneous photograph.”
“Why track the dates?”
“Because Daniel changed the story after every injury.”
Evelyn looked toward the jury.
“I needed something that did not become afraid when he raised his voice.”
Daniel’s attorney suggested she fabricated the abuse to take Whitmore.
Evelyn held up Rose’s ring.
“I already owned more of Whitmore before he married me than he ever legally possessed.”
