Chapter 12 - LAUREN’S RING
Judge Cole ordered Lauren to remove the ring and place it with the court clerk pending ownership verification.
Lauren refused at first.
“This was a gift.”
“Remove it,” the judge repeated.
Daniel’s attorney whispered to her.
Lauren pulled the ring from her finger.
Without it, her confidence seemed to shrink.
Evelyn introduced Rose’s estate inventory.
High-resolution photographs showed the original setting, engraving, and a tiny crescent-shaped repair beneath one prong.
The ring Lauren surrendered had been reset.
The original band had been melted down.
But the center stone carried the same repair mark.
A jeweler’s invoice showed Lauren paid for the alteration two days after Evelyn’s ribs were fractured.
The payment came from Vale Strategic Advisory.
The jeweler’s notes listed Daniel as the person who delivered the ring.
Lauren’s attorney—hastily contacted during recess—argued she did not know it was stolen.
Evelyn opened another email.
Lauren wrote:
It’s old, but once I reset it, she’ll never prove it was Rose’s.
Daniel replied:
Wear it to the hearing.
Lauren turned toward him.
“You told me those emails were deleted.”
The admission escaped before her lawyer could stop her.
Judge Cole ordered the statement preserved.
Daniel’s face hardened.
For the first time, the alliance between him and Lauren showed a fracture.
Evelyn continued.
The ring had sentimental value.
But its legal importance was larger.
Daniel took property during an assault.
Lauren altered it using funds transferred through a suspicious vendor.
Then she wore it to court while supporting his claim that Evelyn imagined the abuse.
The judge granted Evelyn temporary exclusive possession of the marital home, protection from contact, and control of her Whitmore voting shares.
Daniel’s temporary proxy request was denied.
His omitted offshore assets were frozen.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Two detectives entered with Agent Maya Collins.
Daniel’s attorney stood.
“What is happening?”
Maya approached the defense table.
“Daniel Reed, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, witness intimidation, wire fraud, and conspiracy.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“You planned this.”
Evelyn remained still.
“No. You dated it.”
Lauren attempted to leave.
A detective stopped her.
She was not arrested immediately.
She was served with a federal search warrant and notice to preserve all devices.
Daniel’s handcuffs clicked.
Photographers waited outside.
Judge Cole ordered the divorce matter sealed temporarily to protect Evelyn’s medical evidence.
Before Daniel was removed, he looked toward Lauren.
“Say nothing.”
Lauren stared at the empty place on her finger.
