Chapter 13 - THE DEAL LAUREN WANTED
Federal investigators searched Lauren’s apartment.
They found records Daniel believed destroyed.
Passports.
Property deeds.
Cryptocurrency access keys.
A laptop containing complete Blue Harbor ledgers.
They also found photographs of Evelyn’s medical files.
Lauren had copied them from Daniel’s insurance account.
The purpose was clear.
If Evelyn exposed the violence, Daniel and Lauren would describe her scars as self-inflicted injuries connected to emotional instability.
Lauren’s devices contained draft public statements.
One read:
Daniel Reed has spent years privately supporting his wife through serious mental-health episodes.
Another:
Lauren Vale became a trusted friend to the Reed family during a painful marital crisis.
They planned to transform the affair into caregiving.
The fraud into protection.
The abuse into Evelyn’s illness.
Lauren’s attorney requested a cooperation meeting.
She offered evidence against Daniel in exchange for reduced charges.
Prosecutors demanded the full truth.
Lauren admitted the affair began six years earlier.
She admitted creating Vale Strategic Advisory.
She admitted approving Blue Harbor transfers.
She admitted seeing bruises.
But she denied encouraging violence.
Agent Maya played the email sent after Evelyn’s ribs were fractured.
Did she give you the drive?
Lauren looked down.
“I meant the financial records.”
“You knew she was in the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel took the ring.”
“Yes.”
“Why alter it?”
“He said Evelyn would accuse me of stealing.”
“She would have been correct.”
Lauren began crying.
She claimed Daniel manipulated her.
Then investigators showed her an audio recording from the night of the shoulder injury.
Lauren’s voice said:
If she attends the board meeting, make sure she looks unstable—or make sure she can’t attend.
Daniel answered:
Leave it to me.
Lauren stopped speaking.
The recording had been saved automatically by Daniel’s car system.
He had forgotten.
Lauren eventually confessed that she understood Daniel used fear and violence to control Evelyn.
She considered it a private marital problem so long as it protected the transfers.
Prosecutors charged her with conspiracy, wire fraud, identity theft, evidence tampering, and possession of stolen property.
Her cooperation could reduce her sentence.
It would not erase it.
Meanwhile, Daniel continued telling his attorneys Evelyn had manufactured everything.
He claimed she manipulated Lauren.
He claimed federal agents targeted him because Whitmore supplied government hospitals.
Then prosecutors found one final offshore account.
Its beneficiary was not Daniel or Lauren.
