Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT BEFORE COURT

Evelyn slept in a secure apartment arranged through the legal clinic.
She laid each exhibit across the dining table.
Photographs.
Hospital records.
Voicemails.
Company emails.
Offshore statements.
The estate inventory of Rose’s ring.
A timeline linked every injury to a business event.
Tessa reviewed the order with her.
“Do not overwhelm the judge immediately.”
“The scars are the simplest timeline.”
“They are also personal.”
“I know.”
“You can keep them sealed.”
“Daniel’s entire argument depends on making them invisible.”
Tessa did not try to change her mind again.
Agent Maya Collins called at nine.
Federal investigators had verified the Cayman account.
They could not disclose the full investigation inside divorce court.
But they had obtained a sealed warrant related to wire fraud and witness intimidation.
The warrant required one final authentication.
Evelyn’s original voicemail files.
Daniel believed she had only transcripts.
The recordings remained on a secure server.
Maya asked whether Evelyn was prepared to certify them under oath.
“Yes.”
“If Daniel tries to approach you, do not engage.”
“He’ll laugh first.”
Maya was silent.
“You know him well.”
“I had to.”
Before bed, Evelyn opened Rose’s final letter.
Her grandmother had written it shortly before the stroke.
You may one day find that people call you difficult when you ask them to account for what they took.
Do not become easier to steal from.
Evelyn folded the letter into the inside pocket of her coat.
The next morning, Daniel arrived at court with two attorneys and Lauren.
Lauren wore red.
She held Daniel’s hand in front of photographers.
She also wore Rose’s ring.
Evelyn entered through a side door carrying one folder and a small encrypted drive.
No attorney walked beside her.
Daniel saw her alone and relaxed.
His lawyer offered a settlement in the hallway.
Evelyn would surrender half her Whitmore shares.
Daniel would allow her to keep a modest home and provide temporary support.
She would withdraw all allegations of abuse and fraud.
Lauren looked at Evelyn’s closed coat.
“You should take it. Trials are hard on unstable people.”
Evelyn declined.
Daniel leaned near her.
“You are about to humiliate yourself.”
“No,” she said. “You already did that for me.”
The courtroom doors opened.
Evelyn walked inside.
Behind the final row, Agent Maya Collins sat wearing civilian clothes.
May you like
Daniel never noticed her.
👉 Daniel believed Evelyn’s empty chair proved she had no protection, while the investigator who authenticated his arrest warrant was already watching from the gallery.
