Chapter 6 - THE ARREST IN THE BEDROOM
At 9:44 a.m., Derek received confirmation that every transfer had cleared.
He poured whiskey into a coffee mug.
Marlene opened champagne.
The bedroom camera continued recording.
Rachel watched from the hospital through a secured feed.
Derek stood beside the bed where he had attacked her hours earlier.
“She’ll come back.”
Marlene sat in Rachel’s chair.
“She went to the police.”
“She always comes back.”
“Not after this.”
Derek looked toward the blood on the floor.
The stain had not been cleaned.
“We say she fell.”
“She has video?”
“From what? Her phone was in the bathroom.”
Marlene smiled.
“She looked at the ceiling.”
Derek became still.
“What?”
“Before she went into the bathroom. She looked up.”
Derek slowly raised his head.
The green light blinked.
He climbed onto the bed and ripped the smoke detector from the ceiling.
The device continued transmitting.
His face filled the camera.
“Rachel.”
Police entered the house thirty seconds later.
Derek threw the device against the wall.
Officers forced him to the floor.
Marlene attempted to leave through the guesthouse tunnel connecting to the garage.
Another team intercepted her.
Inside her bag were passports, cash, company seals, and Rachel’s missing signature files.
Detective Lane entered the bedroom.
Derek shouted that Rachel had staged the assault.
Lane pointed toward the broken camera.
“You just destroyed evidence while it was livestreaming.”
Derek stopped struggling.
Marlene claimed she had tried to calm him.
The camera showed her smiling.
She claimed she knew nothing about company transfers.
Her phone contained every call.
Police searched the house.
Behind a false wall in Marlene’s guesthouse, they found boxes of invoices, prepaid phones, and records of payments to shell-company owners.
Inside Derek’s office was a file labeled RACHEL TRANSITION.
It contained:
The forged resignation.
The false medical declaration.
A draft divorce accusation describing Rachel as abusive.
Instructions for removing her from the board.
An accidental-death insurance application.
A property transfer giving Marlene lifetime control of the mansion.
And a timeline.
Phase One: Establish instability.
Phase Two: Remove corporate authority.
Phase Three: Secure estate.
Phase Four: Permanent resolution if necessary.
Rachel read the final phrase from her hospital bed.
Elena did not soften it.
“This is evidence of planning.”
Derek and Marlene were charged initially with aggravated domestic assault, conspiracy, financial fraud, forgery, coercion, and evidence destruction.
Additional charges depended on what “permanent resolution” meant.
During the search, officers found a bottle of prescription sedatives inside Derek’s nightstand.
Rachel’s name appeared on the label.
She had never been prescribed them.
Marlene had asked a physician to create the prescription.
The dosage instructions would have caused severe impairment.
A second bottle was empty.
Toxicology tests were ordered on Rachel.
Small amounts of the drug were found in her blood.
She had not been only exhausted during the previous weeks.
