Chapter 10 - THE MAN AT THE BOARD TABLE
The name in the ledger was Charles Bennett.
Rachel’s uncle.
Her father’s younger brother.
Charles had served on the company board since its founding.
He taught Rachel how to read balance sheets.
He attended her wedding.
He called Derek “the brother our family needed.”
When Rachel’s father died, Charles promised to protect her.
The ledger showed payments to him totaling three million dollars.
Investigators found more.
Charles approved vendor exceptions allowing Westlake and other shell companies to bypass review.
He voted to expand Derek’s authority.
He told board members Rachel needed rest.
He recommended Dr. Foster as a medical adviser.
Charles was arrested at his country home.
He initially denied everything.
Then agents showed him the ledger and bank accounts.
He asked to speak with Rachel.
She refused.
Charles submitted a recorded statement.
He claimed Bennett Urban Systems was supposed to belong to him.
Rachel’s father chose her instead.
Charles believed Derek would eventually place him in control after removing Rachel.

The board removed Charles unanimously.
Additional directors who accepted gifts from Derek were investigated.

Rachel insisted on an independent governance review.
“No family member receives automatic authority again.”
Some employees worried the scandal would destroy the company.
Rachel recorded a message from her hospital room.
She did not hide her injuries.

Payroll would continue.

“No employee should pay for crimes committed by executives,” she said.
The message spread beyond the company.
Other victims of Derek contacted police.
A former assistant described being ordered to create false expense reports.
A housekeeper admitted Marlene told her to report Rachel’s “drinking.”
A driver revealed he transported Derek to meetings with shell-company owners.
Each person held a piece.
Together, they dismantled the story that Rachel was unstable and alone.
Charles accepted a plea agreement.
He agreed to testify against Derek and Marlene in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Rachel felt no gratitude.
His cooperation came after exposure, not conscience.
Still, his testimony revealed the final planned event.
Derek intended to host a board retreat at a lake property the following month.
Rachel would be heavily sedated.
