Chapter 12 - HER FATHER’S LAST FILE
Rachel’s father, Thomas Bennett, had not died unaware.
Six months before his heart attack, he hired a private investigator to examine Derek’s finances.
Thomas had noticed vendor payments increasing.
He questioned Charles.
Charles dismissed the concerns.
Thomas then created the R.B. Protection Trust.
It held emergency funds, legal authority, and copies of the investigator’s reports.
The trustee was Elena Ruiz.
Elena looked devastated when the trust was discovered.
“Your father instructed me not to open the file unless Derek tried to remove you from the company or physically harmed you.”
“Why didn’t you tell me when I first came to you?”
“I knew the trust existed. I did not know the sealed evidence file had been activated automatically.”
The activation occurred when Derek submitted the forged resignation.
A courier attempted delivery.
Charles intercepted the package inside the company mailroom.
He hid it in an archive box.
Federal investigators recovered it after searching his office.
Thomas’s report documented Derek’s earlier fraud.
Smaller shell companies.
Personal debts disguised as consulting fees.
Payments to Allison Reed after her identity-theft complaint.
Marlene’s role in suppressing it.
Thomas confronted Derek privately.
A recording captured part of the meeting.
“You married my daughter,” Thomas said. “You did not purchase her company.”
Derek answered:
“She would have nothing this large without people like me.”
“She built it before you arrived.”
“She built a business. I built influence.”
Thomas ordered him to resign.
Derek begged for time.
He promised repayment.
Thomas delayed action because Rachel had recently suffered her second miscarriage.
He feared exposing Derek during her grief would destroy her.
The decision haunted his final letter.
I believed I was protecting you by waiting for the right moment. I may only have given him more time.
Thomas warned that Charles had become defensive.
He suspected his brother was involved.
He created the trust to ensure Rachel could remove them both.
But before he completed the board process, Thomas suffered a fatal heart attack.
His death had been considered natural.
Investigators reviewed his medical history.
He had heart disease.
No preserved samples existed.
There was not enough evidence to claim foul play.
Derek’s messages after the death were disturbing.
He told Marlene:
Thomas solved himself.
Marlene replied:
Then keep Rachel grieving until the audit disappears.
They may not have killed Thomas.
They used his death immediately.
Derek convinced Rachel that reviewing company finances would disrespect her father’s memory.
Charles supported him.
The audit stopped.
Rachel cried while listening to Thomas’s recording.
Her father had seen the danger.
Yet he had also made the mistake Rachel made.
Waiting because exposure seemed too painful.
Protecting someone from truth had protected Derek instead.
The R.B. Protection Trust gave Rachel funds independent of the company.
She used part of them to support employees affected by the investigation and victims connected to Derek’s earlier fraud.
The remaining evidence strengthened the racketeering case.
Derek’s network extended back nearly ten years.
His abuse of Rachel was not separate from the business crimes.
It was the method that kept the company under his control.
The trial date was set.
Derek and Marlene rejected plea offers.
Both believed they could blame the other.
Charles agreed to testify.
Savannah agreed to testify.
Dr. Foster agreed to testify.
Allison Reed agreed to testify.
The housekeeper, driver, accountants, bankers, and investigators prepared statements.
The smoke-detector camera would be shown to the jury.
