Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL PLAN
Detective Marcus Lane watched the bedroom recording twice.
The first time, he focused on the assault.
The second time, he listened to the words surrounding it.
Derek demanded that Rachel approve the bank transfer.
Marlene said the house belonged to them.
Derek accused Rachel of contacting outsiders.
The violence was tied directly to financial coercion.
Lane requested an emergency arrest warrant.
Rachel stopped him from arresting Derek immediately.
“You can arrest him for the assault.”
“That is generally what happens when someone is recorded beating his wife.”
“He’ll know the camera exists.”
“He may already know you escaped.”
“He doesn’t know what uploaded.”
Elena understood Rachel’s reasoning but remained uneasy.
The scheduled transfers began at nine.
Derek believed Rachel’s biometric approval was already stored inside the company system.
He had copied it from an old authorization device.
The bank’s fraud team had replaced the live accounts with controlled mirror accounts.
Derek would see every transfer marked successful.
In reality, no money would leave Bennett Urban Systems.
The mirror system would record each destination, owner, authorization code, and communication.
If police arrested him before the transfer, unknown partners could disappear.
Detective Lane looked at Rachel’s injuries.
“You are asking us to let him continue believing he won.”
“For three hours.”
“And Marlene?”
“She will call every person involved.”
Elena added strict conditions.
Derek and Marlene would remain under surveillance.
Rachel would stay in a protected hospital unit under an alias.
The company board would activate emergency control quietly.
No real funds would move.
Lane agreed reluctantly.
At 8:47 a.m., Derek called Rachel’s phone.
Elena answered through a voice-routing system but remained silent.
Derek left a message.
“You made this worse than it needed to be. Come home before the bank opens and we can still fix it.”
Marlene left another.
“Marriage is not running to police every time your husband becomes frustrated.”
Rachel listened without expression.
At nine, the first transfer activated.
Twelve million dollars appeared to move into Cedar One Development.
Derek sent an encrypted message:
FIRST CLEAR. CONTINUE.
The mirror account captured the recipient.
A city procurement official.
At 9:08, Westlake received another false transfer.
Marlene called her brother.
“Move it through the family account before Rachel wakes up.”
At 9:16, Derek contacted the physician who prepared Rachel’s false incapacity declaration.
“File it today. Say she disappeared after a mental episode.”
The doctor asked whether Rachel had signed the treatment release.
Derek replied:
“Use the old one.”
Every call was recorded under the warrants.
At 9:31, Derek activated the final transaction.
Forty-two million dollars appeared to move through North Creek Holdings.
The system required him to identify the ultimate beneficiary.
Derek entered the name manually.
DMC LEGACY TRUST.
Elena searched the registration.
The trust belonged to Derek and Marlene.
But another beneficiary appeared in the hidden filing.
Marlene’s daughter, whom Derek had always described as a cousin.
Savannah Cole.
Rachel had never met her.
The transfer memo read:
POST-RACHEL DISTRIBUTION.
Rachel stared at the words.
“Post-Rachel?”
Detective Lane’s expression tightened.
Elena opened another secured file from Derek’s system.
It contained a draft death certificate request and instructions for transferring Rachel’s company shares if she died before the divorce could be filed.
The violence that night had not been the final plan.
