Chapter 6 - The Signature He Needed by Midnight
Daniel’s buyout agreement contained a deadline.
If North Vale did not prove control of Blackwood before December 26, its financing expired.
The lenders had already discovered inconsistencies in the pension investment.
They wanted additional collateral.
Daniel offered Grace’s voting shares.
He told them she had agreed to transfer her rights after Christmas dinner.
She had agreed to nothing.
He prepared a proxy stating that Grace voluntarily surrendered authority because she lacked the emotional stability to participate in company decisions.
A second document released Daniel from liability for decisions made during his time as chief financial officer.
The third document approved the North Vale acquisition.
Grace found the papers inside a red folder on Daniel’s desk.
She photographed them.
At the bottom of the proxy was a statement from Dr. Martin Keller, a psychiatrist Grace had never met.
According to Keller, Grace suffered from prolonged grief, financial confusion, and paranoid suspicion toward her husband.
Maya investigated him.
Keller had received consulting payments from Mercer Strategic Infrastructure Partners.
Daniel was not only planning to take Grace’s shares.
He was preparing to declare her incapable of challenging the transfer afterward.
The pension theft had become part of the story he intended to use against her.
When Grace asked questions, she was paranoid.
When retirees complained, they had misunderstood administrative changes.
When board members raised concerns, they were resisting modernization.
Daniel’s power depended on turning every warning into a weakness in the person delivering it.
Grace began recording conversations.
One evening, Daniel said, “Once you sign, you can stop pretending you understand the company.”
Another night, Margaret told her, “A useful wife supports the man creating the wealth.”
Grace looked around the house built with Blackwood money.
She said nothing.
On Christmas Eve, Maya confirmed the court had agreed to remain available for an emergency filing.
The bank’s fraud team was monitoring the pension accounts.
Blackwood’s independent directors were ready to convene if Grace activated the trust provision.
Police could not wait nearby without a confirmed immediate threat.
Maya arranged for private security and two investigators to remain five minutes away.
“Do not let him take you into a room without a camera,” Maya warned.
“What if he becomes violent before dinner?”
“Activate the stream and leave if you can.”
Grace looked at the Christmas tree Samuel had planted years earlier outside the dining-room window.
“I spent too long leaving quietly inside my own life.”
“You do not have to prove courage by staying in danger.”
“I know.”
That distinction mattered.
Grace would not remain because she believed suffering made the evidence stronger.
She would remain only while exits, witnesses, and emergency help were available.
At 5:58 p.m. on Christmas Day, Daniel placed the red folder beside Grace’s plate.
