Chapter 1 - The Christmas Trap

“You don’t deserve a seat here.”

Daniel Mercer twisted his hand into his wife’s hair and dragged her away from the Christmas dinner table.

Grace Blackwood hit the carpet beside an overturned tray.

Roasted vegetables, broken china, and red wine scattered beneath the glowing Christmas tree.

Her white blouse pulled tight against her throat as Daniel seized the collar and dragged her another foot toward the front door.

At the table, his parents did not stand.

Margaret Mercer calmly lifted her wineglass.

Richard Mercer looked uncomfortable, but he still remained in his chair.

“She should know her place,” Margaret said.

Grace pressed one palm against the floor.

Her eyes were wet, but she kept reaching toward the phone that had fallen beneath the edge of the table.

Daniel tightened his grip.

“You’re going upstairs until you’re ready to apologize.”

“For refusing to sign?”

“For humiliating me in my own house.”

The house had belonged to Grace’s family for thirty-seven years.

Daniel knew that.

He simply believed he had repeated his lie long enough to make it true.

Grace’s fingers finally touched the phone.

Its screen illuminated beneath the tablecloth.

Attorney Maya Chen had sent one message.

DID HE TAKE THE BAIT?

Grace looked toward the small camera hidden inside a Christmas decoration in the corner of the dining room.

Its red light blinked.

The livestream was active.

“He just did,” Grace whispered.

Daniel looked down.

“What?”

Miles away, Maya watched the assault from her office.

On one screen, Daniel dragged Grace across the carpet.

On another were bank transfers from the Blackwood Manufacturing Employee Pension Fund.

Twenty-three million dollars had been moved into companies controlled by Daniel and his parents.

Maya picked up her phone.

“Move tonight.”

Within seconds, emergency instructions reached the bank, the board of directors, company security, and the judge waiting to review Grace’s petition.

Back in the dining room, Daniel’s phone began vibrating.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Margaret’s smile disappeared when an alert appeared on her banking application.

ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED.

Daniel released Grace’s hair and grabbed his phone.

His company email had been disabled.

His corporate cards were frozen.

An emergency board meeting had been called.

A final message appeared from Blackwood Manufacturing’s general counsel.

DANIEL MERCER—ALL EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY SUSPENDED EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Daniel stared at Grace.

“What did you send?”

Grace remained on the floor, holding the phone that had recorded everything.

“The truth.”

Headlights swept across the front windows.

Several vehicles were stopping outside.

Daniel had believed Christmas dinner would end with Grace surrendering her shares.

Instead, it had given Maya the final evidence needed to take his power away.

👉 But Daniel had not stolen only Grace’s authority—he had emptied the retirement accounts of the workers who built her family’s company.
