Chapter 5 - The House Daniel Claimed as His
The Blackwood house stood on twelve wooded acres outside Pittsburgh.
Samuel had purchased it before Grace was born.
Christmas had always filled the rooms with workers, neighbors, and relatives.
Samuel invited night-shift employees who had nowhere else to go.
He insisted no one ate alone during the holidays.
After Daniel’s parents moved in, the traditions changed.
Margaret replaced family photographs with portraits of the Mercers.
She stopped inviting factory employees.
She ordered the staff to serve dinner only to relatives and board members Daniel wanted to impress.
The house was held by a separate family trust.
Grace was the sole future owner.
Margaret knew none of this.
She believed marriage gave Daniel half.
Daniel encouraged that belief because it kept his mother loyal.
He also told Grace that challenging Margaret would create unnecessary stress.
“Let her enjoy feeling at home,” he said.
Enjoying the house became controlling it.
Margaret chose meals.
Changed rooms.
Opened Grace’s mail.
When Grace objected, Daniel said she was territorial.
Richard rarely confronted his wife.
He apologized privately and remained silent publicly.
By December, Daniel began ordering Grace to request permission before inviting anyone over.
He had the locks changed on Samuel’s study.
He moved Grace’s financial records into a company storage facility.
Then he presented her with a household expense report.
It claimed she owed the Mercer family more than $300,000 for “support” provided since Samuel’s death.
Grace almost laughed.
She had paid every major bill.
Maya advised her not to correct him.
“Let him include the house in the pressure campaign. It proves the control extends beyond the company.”
Hidden cameras were installed legally in common areas owned by Grace’s trust.
The dining-room camera looked like part of a Christmas decoration.
A second camera faced the hallway.
The front-door system backed up footage directly to Maya’s office.
Grace’s phone contained an emergency livestream application.
If she pressed the side button three times, Maya would see and hear everything.
Daniel announced that Christmas dinner would include his parents, several friendly directors, and two bankers connected to the buyout.
He wanted Grace to sign the voting proxy after dessert.
She told him she would consider it.
His behavior immediately became warmer.
He bought her a white blouse.
He said she looked like “the old Grace” again.
She understood what he meant.
The obedient version.
The woman who smiled while he erased her.
Two days before Christmas, Margaret saw Walter Hayes delivering an envelope at the gate.
Inside was a list of retirees whose payments had been cut.
Margaret burned the list in the fireplace.
