Chapter 15 - The Trial After Christmas
The criminal trial began eleven months after the Christmas dinner.
Daniel faced charges involving pension theft, wire fraud, identity fraud, corporate sabotage, coercion, and domestic assault.
Margaret was tried beside him.
Richard had accepted responsibility for financial conspiracy and agreed to testify separately.
Daniel entered the courtroom in a dark suit.
He looked more like the executive Grace married than the man who dragged her across the carpet.
His attorney described him as a reformer punished for confronting an entitled heir.
Grace had inherited control, he argued.

Tessa described the planned factory closure.
Engineers presented proof that Daniel intentionally delayed maintenance.
Accountants traced pension money into Mercer properties and offshore accounts.
Richard testified against his son.
Daniel stared at him with open hatred.
“Did you sign the transfers?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel promised the buyout would make us wealthy and threatened to expose my tax fraud if I refused.”
“Did Grace approve?”
“No.”
“Did you know she had not approved?”
“Yes.”
Margaret’s attorney argued that she was only a mother trusting her son.
The prosecution displayed her texts.
SHAME WORKS.
REMOVE HER FROM THE TABLE.
SHE WILL SIGN IF EVERYONE SEES HER REFUSE.
Grace testified last.
Daniel’s attorney asked why she had allowed the dinner to continue if she expected coercion.
“Because legal protection required proof of intent.”
“So you wanted him to become violent?”
“No. I wanted him to explain the transfers. He chose violence when explanations failed.”
“You could have left.”
“I had exits, security nearby, and an emergency livestream. I stayed only while those protections existed.”
The attorney asked whether Grace enjoyed taking control of the company.
She looked toward the jury.
“I would have preferred spending Christmas with a husband who had not stolen anyone’s retirement.”
Daniel chose to testify.
He said every decision had been made to save Blackwood.
Then the prosecutor showed his projected personal profit.
