Chapter 6 - The House Thomas Protected
Thomas Bennett had purchased the family home shortly before he became ill.
The property sat on six wooded acres outside Columbus, Ohio.
It included the main house, a workshop, and a smaller cottage Thomas hoped Maya might one day use as an independent home.
In his will, Thomas left Linda the right to live in the main house for the rest of her life.
But ownership passed equally to Maya and Evan.
Linda could not sell the land.
Neither could Victor.
If Maya and Evan agreed, they could eventually divide the property or preserve it together.
Victor learned about the arrangement only after marrying Linda.
From that moment, he began insisting that the will was unfair.
He claimed Thomas had left Linda dependent on her children.
Linda repeated that argument so often that it began sounding like her own belief.
Then a developer offered $2.6 million for the land.
The property bordered a planned commercial highway interchange.
Victor wanted to sell immediately.
Evan refused.
Maya refused too.
Thomas had built the cottage himself.
She planned to renovate it with accessible doors, lower counters, and a roll-in shower.
For Maya, the cottage represented freedom.
For Victor, it represented the moment he would lose control of her money.
He told Linda that refusing the sale would leave them unable to maintain the property.
He showed her unpaid tax notices.
They were later revealed to be fabricated.
He claimed Evan wanted to evict them.
Evan had said nothing of the kind.
Then Victor presented Maya with a transfer agreement.
If she signed, he promised to renovate the cottage.
The document actually transferred her ownership interest into a company controlled by him.
Maya noticed Thomas’s name was misspelled.
She refused.
Victor’s patience ended that day.
He began hiding her braces.
At first, only for an hour.
Then for entire mornings.
He claimed Maya had misplaced them.
Without the braces, she could not reach the cottage or leave the house safely.
Each time she protested, Linda said the same thing.
“Victor would never do that.”
But one afternoon Maya saw him unlock the garage cabinet.
Inside were her new custom braces.
Still wrapped in plastic.
They had arrived months earlier.
