Chapter 1 - The Call Still Recording
“She just lost her balance.”
Victor Hale stood beside the refrigerator, shouting as though volume could turn his lie into truth.
Across the kitchen, Maya sat trembling on a wooden chair.
Her blue sweater was twisted at one shoulder. Her face was swollen and red. She pressed a white towel beneath her nose, but blood had already soaked through the fabric.
Half-eaten breakfast covered the table.
Cold eggs.
An untouched cup of coffee.
A plate shattered near the cabinets.
Maya’s leg braces were gone.
Without them, she could not safely stand.
Her mother, Linda, remained beside the front door with one hand covering her mouth.
She looked horrified.
But she did not move toward her daughter.
Then the side door flew open.
Evan Bennett rushed into the kitchen wearing a rain-soaked black jacket.
He had driven nearly three hours after receiving a call from Maya at 1:17 that morning.
The line had remained open for only forty-eight seconds.
Long enough for him to hear Victor yelling.
Long enough to hear something hit the floor.
Long enough to hear Maya cry out.
Evan froze when he saw his younger sister.
Then he crossed the room and dropped to one knee beside her.
“I’m taking you out of here.”
Maya lowered the towel slightly.
Her lips shook.
“He took my braces.”
Evan’s expression changed.
He looked at the phone on the table.
The call screen was still open.
A recording application continued running beneath it.
Victor saw the moving sound waves.
His face tightened.
He stepped toward the table.
“Give me that phone.”
Evan reached it first.
Outside, tires turned onto the wet driveway.
Red and blue light swept across the kitchen walls.
Victor stopped.
Linda moved in front of the deadbolt.
Evan stood between Victor and Maya, holding the phone tightly.
A police officer pounded on the door.
“Police! Open up!”
Maya raised her eyes toward her mother.
Linda’s hand remained beside the lock.
Evan’s voice became quiet.
“Open the door, Mom.”
Victor stared at the recording on Maya’s phone.
Because it had captured more than the attack.
