Chapter 4 - The Brother Victor Pushed Away
Evan had never trusted Victor completely.
He disliked the way his stepfather spoke for Maya.
He hated how every family visit ended with Victor explaining why Maya was too fragile to make her own decisions.
But Victor knew how to make concern look like aggression.
During one visit, Evan found Maya crying after a physical therapy appointment.
She admitted Victor had refused to let her therapist discuss adaptive driving.
Evan confronted him.
“You don’t get to decide what she can do.”
Victor moved closer.
“You live three hours away. You appear twice a month and think you understand her care?”
“I understand she’s an adult.”
“She falls.”
“She learns.”
“She could crack her head open because you fill it with unrealistic ideas.”
The argument became so loud that Linda begged Evan to leave.
Victor told Maya her brother had become unstable since working emergency calls.
He claimed Evan enjoyed conflict.
Then he blocked Evan’s number on Maya’s phone.
Whenever Evan called the house, Victor answered.
“She’s sleeping.”
“She’s at therapy.”
“She doesn’t want to talk.”
Weeks passed.
Maya believed Evan had become too busy.
Evan believed Maya wanted space.
Victor encouraged both misunderstandings.
At Christmas, Evan arrived without warning.
He found Maya using braces that were splitting near the knee joints.
He also noticed the new truck in the driveway.
Victor said it was necessary for family transportation.
The truck had been purchased through Bennett Mobility Solutions.
When Evan asked whether Maya’s trust paid for it, Linda became defensive.
“Victor uses it to take her to appointments.”
“I’ve been taking the bus,” Maya said.
The room went silent.
Victor pulled Evan aside.
He accused him of upsetting Linda and humiliating Maya.
“Your sister already feels useless. Stop making her feel like a financial burden.”
Evan grabbed Victor’s shirt.
Maya screamed for them to stop.
Victor did not fight back.
He smiled.
That smile told Evan he had made a mistake.
The next morning, Linda called him.
“You’re not welcome here until you apologize.”
Evan refused.
Victor had succeeded.
He had turned the only person likely to challenge him into the family’s supposed threat.
Months later, Maya finally found an old tablet that still contained Evan’s email address.
She sent four words.
