Chapter 11 - The Kitchen Door

Victor struck Maya across the face.

Her nose began bleeding almost immediately.

Linda screamed his name.

Maya fell sideways into the chair.

Victor pulled her upright.

“Look what you made happen.”

He wrapped the white kitchen towel around her hand and ordered her to clean herself before the buyer arrived.

Maya pressed the cloth beneath her nose.

Her entire body shook.

But the phone on the table was still recording.

Victor paced beside the refrigerator.

“You fell. Do you understand?”

Maya said nothing.

“You lost your balance.”

Linda stood near the door.

“Victor, we need a doctor.”

“We need her signature.”

At 7:21 a.m., Evan’s car turned into the driveway.

He ran through the rain and entered through the unlocked side door.

Victor spun toward him.

Evan saw Maya.

Everything inside him stopped.

Then instinct took over.

He knelt beside his sister without touching her injured face.

“I’m taking you out of here.”

Maya lowered the towel.

“He took my braces.”

Evan saw the phone and the active recording.

He picked it up.

Victor stepped forward.

“That device belongs to this house.”

“No,” Evan said. “It belongs to Maya.”

He sent the audio file and location to the officer whose contact the dispatcher had provided.

Within seconds, the officer replied.

WE’RE AT THE HOUSE.

Linda moved toward the front door.

But instead of opening it, she stood in front of the lock.

Victor whispered to her.

“If they come inside, you go down with me.”

Evan stood.

He placed himself between Victor and Maya.

Police pounded on the door.

Victor tried to take the phone.

Evan raised it beyond his reach.

On the screen were old messages from Victor.

SIGN OR I CANCEL YOUR CARE.

NO BRACES UNTIL YOU COOPERATE.

YOU WILL LOSE THE HOUSE AND YOUR FREEDOM.

The officer shouted again.

Evan looked at his mother.

“Open the door, Mom.”

Linda’s hand trembled beside the deadbolt.

Then Maya spoke.

“If you protect him now, you’re choosing what he did.”

Linda closed her eyes.

May you like

She unlocked the door.

👉 Linda finally let the police inside, but she had years of forged documents hidden in the room directly behind them.
