Chapter 16 - The Hearing Where Maya Stood
Before the criminal trial, the court held a hearing to determine whether Linda could remain in the family home.
Evan wanted her removed immediately.
Maya was less certain.
Thomas’s will had granted Linda the right to live there.
But that right assumed she would protect the property and her children.
Denise argued that Linda had violated the terms through fraud and participation in the attempted sale.
Linda’s attorney asked the court for mercy.
She had cooperated.
She had helped recover records.
She had been controlled by Victor.
Maya listened without interruption.
Then the judge asked whether she wished to speak.
Maya stood using her new blue braces and forearm crutches.
The courtroom became silent.
“Victor used fear to control my mother,” she said. “But fear did not sign every paper. Fear did not block the door when police came. Fear did not tell them I was asleep.”
Linda lowered her head.
“I do not want my mother homeless. But I will not return to a house where she has authority over me.”
Maya proposed a solution.
Linda could live temporarily in the smaller guest apartment near town, using her own retirement income.
The main property would be placed under Maya and Evan’s direct control.
The cottage would be renovated for Maya.
Linda would have no access to the trust, medical decisions, or property records.
Any future relationship would depend on honesty, counseling, and respect for Maya’s boundaries.
The judge accepted the agreement.
Outside the courthouse, Linda tried to hug Maya.
Maya stepped back.
“I’m not ready.”
Linda’s arms fell to her sides.
“I understand.”
For once, she did not ask Maya to comfort her.
Renovation of Thomas’s cottage began the following week.
Accessible doors.
A lowered kitchen island.
Emergency call systems.
A therapy room facing the woods.
Maya selected every detail.
Evan stayed nearby to help, but he never made decisions without asking.
One evening, he apologized for allowing Victor to drive him away.
“I should have tried harder.”
Maya shook her head.
“He built a wall between us. We’re the ones taking it down.”
Then Denise called.
