The microSD card exposed more than altered reports.
Aegis had begun as a legitimate rehabilitation study.
Then Apex Defense offered the university forty million dollars to expand it.
The new goal was not restoring movement.
It was increasing reaction speed in soldiers by stimulating the nervous system.
The project was renamed Phase Nine.
The university’s ethics board never approved human testing at the higher dosage.
Lang and Ward recruited student veterans through the veterans’ center.
Participants believed they were receiving physical therapy.
Consent forms described mild electrical stimulation.
They did not mention the experimental drug injected before each session.
Jordan Ellis was Subject 09-14.
His dosage had been increased three times.
The morning after his final session, he called the laboratory and said he could not feel his left side.
No ambulance was sent.
Ward visited his apartment.
Four hours later, Jordan was found unconscious.
Dr. Kent—the same private physician who consulted for Apex—signed a preliminary report suggesting drug use.
Jordan died before reaching the hospital.
The toxicology document in the official file had been altered.
Teresa Ellis had been told her son relapsed because the university feared another veteran’s overdose would damage its reputation.
The truth was worse.
Jordan had never had a substance-abuse history.
Someone created one after his death.
Maya had found the original intake form.
Frank sat beside Teresa while Ortiz explained the evidence.
Teresa did not cry.
She had spent six months being told grief had made her irrational.
Now the room was full of people confirming she had been right.
“Who changed his file?” she asked.
“Professor Lang approved the final report,” Ortiz said.
“And Ward?”
“His digital signature appears on the security and incident records.”
Teresa looked toward Frank.
“He stood in my living room and told me Jordan chose drugs over recovery.”
Frank lowered his head.
“I brought him there.”
Ward had asked Frank to attend the memorial outreach visit.
Frank had told Teresa that Ward was honorable.
The memory tasted like poison.
“You didn’t know,” Teresa said.
“I should have questioned him.”
“You trusted your commander.”
“So did Maya.”
At the hospital, Maya watched Jordan’s mother through a video call.
She wrote a message on her tablet.
I’M SORRY I DIDN’T FIND IT SOONER.
Teresa shook her head.
“You found what everyone else was paid not to see.”
Maya then typed:
THERE IS ANOTHER SUBJECT.
The database showed Subject 09-18 had suffered a severe neurological event two weeks earlier.
The name was hidden behind an identification code.
The subject had not returned to campus.
Ortiz traced the code.
It belonged to Ryan Hayes.
Ryan stared at the report.
“I never joined the Aegis trial.”
