Chapter 11 - THE PROFESSOR’S PRIVATE RECORDING
Professor Lang met investigators in a federal interview room.
He looked nothing like the confident scientist from university advertisements.
His hands shook.
His attorney placed a recorder on the table.
Lang admitted falsifying Aegis safety data.
He admitted using unapproved dosages.
He admitted allowing Apex executives to influence scientific conclusions.
But he denied ordering Maya’s assault.
“Ward said he would recover the files.”
“Did you ask how?” Ortiz said.
“No.”
“Did you know cameras would be disabled?”
“Not until afterward.”
“Did you know Ryan’s identity would be used?”
Lang looked down.
“I knew Ward had selected him as a contingency.”
“A contingency for what?”
“To explain irregular results.”
Teresa’s attorney listened from another room.
Lang continued.
Ward controlled recruitment and security.
Apex Vice President Charles Voss controlled the money.
Lang controlled the laboratory.
They each believed the others would absorb the risk if the project failed.
Then Ortiz asked about Jordan.
Lang’s answer changed everything.
“Jordan did not die from Phase Nine alone.”
“What does that mean?”
“He was recovering when he reached the hospital.”
“Then why did he die?”
Lang swallowed.
“Ward called me and said Jordan was awake. He was asking questions.”
“What happened next?”
“Dr. Kent changed his medication.”
The room went silent.
Lang had known Jordan might survive.
He did not stop Kent.
He did not call the family.
He signed the altered report.
“There is a recording,” Lang said.
“Where?”
“In my private research archive.”
He gave investigators a password.
The archive contained a video meeting recorded the night Jordan died.
Ward appeared on screen with Charles Voss.
Voss said, “If the subject speaks, Apex terminates everything.”
Ward replied, “Kent will handle the medical side.”
Lang asked, “And if he doesn’t?”
Ward looked directly into the camera.
“Then you will decide whether your career matters more than one unstable volunteer.”
Lang said nothing.
His silence became consent.
The recording also revealed the attack plan.
Ward instructed Owen Price to retrieve Maya’s files.
Voss ordered Travis Cole to assist.
Lang warned them not to kill her.
Ward replied, “Her father will make enough noise to discredit the investigation. He always leads with anger.”
Frank listened from behind the glass.
Ward had studied him.
Used him.
Assumed his love for Maya would become another weapon against the truth.
The final seconds of the meeting contained a sentence no one expected.
Voss asked Ward whether Frank might recognize the hoodie.
