Chapter 12 - THE COMMANDER AT FRANK’S DOOR

Ward disappeared before police reached his home.

His office had been emptied.

His phone was found in a trash bin near the airport.

A warrant was issued nationwide.

Frank returned home for the first time in four days to shower and change clothes.

He checked every room before locking the door.

At 1:12 a.m., someone knocked.

Ward stood on the porch.

He wore civilian clothes and carried no visible weapon.

Frank did not open the door.

“You have thirty seconds before I call Detective Ortiz.”

Ward looked toward the security camera.

“I came because you deserve to hear it from me.”

“I heard the recording.”

“You heard Lang protecting himself.”

“I heard your voice.”

Ward’s expression remained calm.

“You know what the Aegis project could have done.”

“It killed Jordan.”

“Every military advancement has a cost.”

“They were students.”

“They were veterans who volunteered to serve something larger than themselves.”

“They did not consent.”

Ward moved closer to the door.

“You and I followed orders that put men at risk.”

“We told them the mission.”

“We told them what command approved.”

Frank felt old memories shifting under Ward’s words.

For years, he had accepted Ward’s version of certain operations because questioning him felt like betraying the men who never returned.

“Did you falsify reports overseas too?” Frank asked.

Ward’s jaw tightened.

“This is about Maya.”

“No. This is about how long you’ve believed people beneath your rank were expendable.”

Ward lowered his voice.

“Maya is alive.”

“Because she fought.”

“I told Price not to kill her.”

“You sent men to beat my daughter.”

“I sent men to recover stolen national-security material.”

“It was research fraud.”

“Apex intended to deliver Phase Nine to soldiers.”

Frank’s phone was recording from inside his pocket.

Ortiz had warned him that Ward might seek contact.

Officers were already moving toward the house.

Ward continued.

“Give me the microSD card.”

“It’s with federal investigators.”

Ward’s calm finally broke.

“You always were a terrible liar.”

He reached beneath his jacket.

Frank moved sideways instead of opening the door.

A bullet struck the lock.

The reinforced door held.

Police lights flooded the street.

Ward ran toward the backyard.

Frank stayed inside.

Every part of him wanted to chase.

That was what Ward expected.

Instead, Frank watched the security feeds and directed officers toward the alley.

Ward was arrested beside the garden fence.

A silver eagle ring was found in his pocket.

As officers pulled him past the porch, Ward looked at Frank.

“You became soft.”

Frank answered through the closed door.

“No. I finally stopped confusing discipline with obedience.”

👉 Ward was in custody, but the encrypted files on his second phone showed someone above him had authorized the entire operation.
