Chapter 18 - FRANK’S LAST ORDER FROM WARD
Frank testified on the seventh week of trial.
Ward’s attorney portrayed him as an unstable veteran seeking revenge.
He asked about Frank’s combat history.
His post-service counseling.
His anger after seeing Maya in the hospital.
Frank answered honestly.
“Yes, I was angry.”
“Did you want to hurt Colonel Ward?”
“I wanted my daughter whole again. Hurting him could not do that.”
“You confronted him at your home.”
“He came to my home.”
“You recorded him without his knowledge.”
“The law allowed it.”
“You set a trap.”
Frank looked toward Ward.
“No. He came because he believed he could still give me orders.”
The prosecutor played the porch recording.
Ward defended Aegis.
He demanded the microSD card.
He admitted sending Price and Travis.
Then came the gunshot against Frank’s door.
Jurors flinched.
The prosecutor asked Frank why he did not chase Ward.
Frank paused.
“Because that was the last order he tried to give me without speaking.”
“What order?”
“Become angry. Act alone. Ruin the case.”
Frank looked toward Maya.
“I had followed that kind of order from him before.”
The prosecutor asked what he meant.
Frank revealed that Ward had suppressed misconduct complaints during their military service.
Price’s convoy inventory scandal was real.
Equipment disappeared.
Ward blamed local contractors and protected Price.
Frank had accepted the report.
Federal investigators later connected that missing equipment to early Apex testing programs.
Ward’s relationship with Voss began overseas.
Phase Nine was not their first secret project.
It was the first one fully exposed.
Ward’s defense objected.
The judge allowed the financial records.
The past showed the pattern.
Ward used honor to demand silence.
He used rank to replace evidence.
He rewarded people who obeyed and destroyed people who questioned.
Lang testified next.

Each tried to minimize his own role.
The documents did not.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on every major count.
Ward received decades in federal prison.
Voss received a longer sentence for financing the conspiracy and unlawful testing.
Mercer was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.
Lang lost his medical and academic licenses and received prison time.
Price and Travis were convicted for the attack.
Kent was convicted for falsifying medical records and his role in Jordan’s death.
The judge ordered Apex to pay restitution to every trial participant and family.
Before Ward was removed, he looked toward Frank.
“You destroyed everything we served.”
