Chapter 15 - THE FILE LABELED UNSTABLE
Maya’s scholarship record contained complaints she had never seen.
One claimed she became aggressive during a laboratory meeting.
Another said she showed signs of paranoia.
A third accused her of stealing medication.
Every complaint was unsigned.
Professor Lang had approved them.
Provost Mercer placed them in a confidential file.
Ward flagged Maya as a potential security risk.
Together, the documents created a future explanation.
If Maya reported illegal testing, she was unstable.
If she possessed evidence, she had stolen it.
If she was attacked, Ryan—the traumatized veteran—had done it.
If she died, the incident could be described as a conflict between two troubled students.
The plan depended on stereotypes.
A young woman was emotional.
A veteran was violent.
A grieving mother was irrational.
An angry father was dangerous.
Frank understood why Ward felt so confident.
He had not built one lie.
He had built four lies that supported each other.
The federal prosecutor offered Owen Price a cooperation agreement.
Price accepted.
He admitted Ward instructed him to confront Maya and retrieve the data.
Travis was supposed to restrain her.
Price wore Ryan’s hoodie.
When Maya recognized Price’s eagle ring, she tried to run.
He struck her.
Once.
Then again when she refused to reveal the drive.
Price claimed he never intended to break her jaw.
The prosecutor placed the X-ray on the table.
“Six fractures do not happen by accident.”
Price looked away.
He confessed that Ward ordered them to leave Maya near the stairwell and plant Ryan’s phone inside her bag.
The plan failed because Maya hid the phone beneath her body before losing consciousness.
Its automatic upload continued.
Price also confirmed Mercer knew force might be used.
“She said Maya could not be allowed to reach the morning board meeting.”
The prosecutor asked whether anyone tried to stop the plan.
Price named one person.
Sophie Miller.
Maya’s roommate had delivered the laptop under threat, but when she realized they intended to hurt Maya, she sent the warning message.
SCIENCE BUILDING. CAMERAS ARE OFF.
Sophie hoped Maya would understand it as a warning not to go.
Maya believed it came from a witness offering evidence.
The same message that nearly saved her had led her into the trap.
Sophie visited the hospital after being released from protective custody.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Maya studied her for a long time.
Then she typed:
YOU WERE AFRAID.
“I still helped them.”
YOU CAME BACK WITH THE LOCATION.
Sophie began crying.
Maya did not erase what happened.
