Chapter 8 - THE WILL THEY COULD NOT FIND

The amended will was hidden inside Rebecca’s package for Daniel.
Unlike the document Grant submitted after her death, it removed him from every position of authority.
Rebecca named Daniel as temporary guardian of Emma’s maternal trust.
An independent bank would manage the money.
Grant would receive nothing.
More importantly, Rebecca included a clause addressing Lena.
If Lena Walsh, any company associated with her, or any person acting with her gained access to Emma’s trust, every transfer would trigger an automatic fraud investigation.
Rebecca knew Lena’s full name years before Lena introduced herself to Daniel.
Daniel stared at the document.
“She married me knowing Rebecca had named her.”
Professor Lawson nodded.
“Marriage gave her access to your finances, your military benefits, your insurance records, and Emma.”
Lena had not simply helped Grant steal Rebecca’s estate.
She had entered Daniel’s life to neutralize the only adult Rebecca trusted to stop them.
Investigators examined Daniel and Lena’s marriage documents.
Within six months of the wedding, Lena persuaded him to change several beneficiary forms.
She became primary beneficiary on a substantial military life-insurance policy.
She also received temporary control of Daniel’s assets if he became incapacitated during deployment.
Emma remained a secondary beneficiary.
If Daniel died while serving overseas, Lena would gain control of the house, investments, and payments intended to support Emma.
Grant had created a company positioned to purchase those assets through private sales.
The system surrounded both father and daughter.
Daniel remembered Lena repeatedly encouraging him to volunteer for dangerous assignments.
He had interpreted it as pride in his service.
Now every conversation felt contaminated.
The hospital protective order barred Lena and Grant from visiting Emma.
Detective Chen allowed them to believe the investigation remained focused on the current assault.
They continued contacting Daniel.
Grant offered to explain Rebecca’s estate privately.
Lena sent photographs from their wedding and messages about the life they built.
She wrote:
Emma is confused. Don’t let one incident erase our marriage.
Daniel answered only once.
One incident did not start in that townhouse.
Lena stopped messaging.
Hours later, investigators detected movement at Daniel’s home.
Lena had entered using a copied key despite being prohibited from accessing financial records.
Police watched her remove a locked metal case from the bedroom closet.
She carried it to Grant’s vehicle.
Officers stopped them before they left the driveway.
Inside the case were Daniel’s original beneficiary forms, Rebecca’s missing correspondence, several passports, and $84,000 in cash.
A second compartment contained Emma’s phone and laptop.
Grant claimed he found them after the hospital attack.
Detective Chen asked why he had concealed them.
He requested an attorney.
Lena’s diamond ring was collected.
Laboratory testing found Emma’s blood beneath the stone and pale-blue grout dust inside the setting.
Grant’s scratched hand contained Emma’s DNA.
The hospital clothes showed fibers matching the moving blanket found in his vehicle.
The random-robbery story collapsed completely.
Both were arrested for Emma’s assault, kidnapping, evidence tampering, identity theft, and conspiracy.
Charges related to Rebecca’s death remained pending.
As officers led Lena away, she looked at Daniel.
“You know Grant did this. I tried to protect Emma.”
Daniel stood beside Detective Chen.
“You helped him move her body.”
Lena’s expression changed.
She had not known about the cloud recording.
Daniel continued.
“You had nineteen minutes.”
For the first time, she looked afraid.
At the hospital, Emma was told they had been arrested.
She closed her eyes and released a breath she seemed to have been holding for years.
Then Professor Lawson opened Emma’s recovered laptop.
The encrypted drive contained a folder Rebecca had never created.
It was dated only six months earlier.
The folder had been added by someone secretly investigating Grant and Lena from inside their own operation.
