Chapter 1 - THE TWO INITIALS

Emma Hayes lay beneath cold emergency-room lights, unable to tell her father who had attacked her.

White bandages covered her head, wrists, and hands. One eye was swollen nearly shut. Dried blood darkened the edge of her hospital gown.

Dr. Patel raised an X-ray toward the light.

“Her jaw is shattered in six places.”

Colonel Daniel Hayes dropped to one knee beside the bed.

He had landed from an overseas deployment less than three hours earlier, still wearing his U.S. Army uniform.

“Emma, I’m here.”

His twenty-one-year-old daughter stared at him with terrified eyes.

She tried to speak.

Only a broken sound escaped.

Daniel gripped her fingers.

“You don’t have to talk.”

Through the glass wall, Lena and Grant stood between two police officers.

Lena was Daniel’s wife and Emma’s stepmother.

Grant had been married to Emma’s late biological mother, Rebecca. He had remained Emma’s stepfather even after Rebecca died seven years earlier.

The two people rarely appeared together.

Yet both had reached the hospital before Daniel’s plane landed.

Lena covered her mouth as though crying.

Grant kept insisting the attack had been a random robbery outside Emma’s apartment.

Emma saw them.

Her entire body tightened.

The monitor began beeping faster.

Daniel followed her gaze.

“Both of you, leave.”

Lena pressed one hand against the glass.

“Daniel, she needs family.”

“She has family.”

Grant stepped forward.

“I found her. I saved her life.”

Emma’s fingers dug painfully into Daniel’s palm.

“Get them away from this room,” Daniel ordered.

A detective named Olivia Chen approached the glass and directed officers to move Lena and Grant down the hallway.

When they disappeared, Emma’s breathing slowed.

She lifted one trembling finger.

Daniel opened his hand beneath hers.

Emma traced two letters against his skin.

L.

G.

Then she drew a square.

A smaller square inside it.

Daniel recognized the shape.

“A safe?”

Emma blinked once.

Yes.

Her lips moved beneath the support brace.

“L… G…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Daniel looked toward the chair where hospital staff had placed Emma’s belongings.

Her backpack was open.

Her wallet remained inside.

So did forty dollars in cash.

But her phone and laptop were gone.

A robber had taken electronics but left cash and credit cards.

Detective Chen entered.

Daniel showed her what Emma had drawn.

“Lena. Grant. Safe.”

Chen looked through the glass.

Grant had fresh scratches across his right hand.

Lena twisted a diamond ring around her finger. Beneath the stone was a dark reddish stain mixed with something resembling blue wax.

The detective’s expression changed.

“Seal Emma’s clothes. Photograph every injury. No visitors without written authorization.”

Lena attempted to approach again.

Daniel stood between her and the bed.

“You were with her for eleven minutes before the ambulance arrived,” he said.

Lena’s fake concern faltered.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You had minutes to call me, Grant, and a private attorney—but you supposedly never saw who attacked my daughter?”

Grant stopped struggling against the officer.

Behind Daniel, Emma squeezed his hand again.

Detective Chen opened the preliminary hospital file.

The paramedics had recorded where Emma was found.

But a photograph of her shoes showed pale-blue tile dust embedded in the soles.

There were no blue tiles anywhere near the parking lot where the “robbery” supposedly occurred.

There were, however, pale-blue tiles inside Rebecca’s old townhouse.

The house where Grant still kept a private office.

👉 Emma had not been attacked where they found her—and the safe she drew belonged to the mother who died before she could expose what Grant and Lena had done.
