Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL OF LENA AND GRANT

The courtroom could not hold every victim.
Some watched from an overflow room.
Others submitted statements.
Grant and Lena sat at separate defense tables.
They no longer looked like partners.
They looked like people competing to survive the same evidence.
The prosecution began with Rebecca.
Her trusts.
Her discovery of the theft.
Her recorded confrontation.
Thomas Bell presented the steering photographs.
A forensic mechanic matched the tool marks to Grant’s wrench.
Samuel Price described delaying emergency assistance.
Marisol authenticated the original will.
Then the prosecution moved to Emma.
The false loans.
The hidden safe.
The cloned detective message.
The blue tiles.
The nineteen-minute abduction.
The cloud recording played through the courtroom.
Grant’s voice demanded the drive.
Lena struck Emma.
The flashlight connected with bone.
Several jurors looked away.
Emma did not.
She watched Grant’s face as his own voice said:
“Not yet.”
Then Emma took the stand.
She wore a dark jacket over a high-necked blouse that concealed most of the remaining scars.
Daniel sat in the gallery.
He did not wear his uniform.
This was not a military operation.
It was Emma’s testimony.
The prosecutor asked how she first suspected Lena and Grant.
Emma spoke slowly.
“They used… the same words.”
“What words?”
“Don’t upset Dad.”
She described finding them together.
Opening the safe.
Copying the drive.
Returning to the townhouse.
“What happened when you tried to leave?”
Emma’s voice weakened.
She used the tablet.
Grant grabbed me. Lena locked the door.
“Who struck your jaw?”
Emma pointed toward Grant.
“Did Lena try to stop him?”
Emma shook her head.
The tablet displayed:
She held my hair. She helped move me.
The defense attorney approached carefully.
He suggested Emma had hated Lena before the assault.
Emma answered aloud.
“I feared her.”
“Could that fear have affected your memory?”
“My phone remembered too.”
The attorney changed direction.
He implied Daniel and Professor Lawson pressured Emma to accuse them.
Emma looked at the jury.
“My father didn’t believe me before.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emma continued.
“He believes evidence now.”
Lena’s attorney claimed Grant controlled her.
The prosecutor played Lena’s messages, forged military forms, and notes identifying targets.
Grant’s attorney claimed Lena designed the operation.
The prosecution showed Grant’s wrench, property companies, and voice threatening Rebecca.
Each defense strengthened the case against the other.
Rebecca’s video diary played last.
People who manipulate love depend on you being ashamed that you believed them.
Lena stared at the screen.
Grant looked down.
After four weeks, the jury received dozens of counts.
Murder.
Attempted murder.
Kidnapping.
Aggravated assault.
Racketeering.
Identity theft.
Fraud.
Evidence tampering.
Military-document forgery.
The jury deliberated for two days.
During the wait, Emma returned to the hospital for another procedure.
She woke to find Daniel beside her.
He held no documents.
Asked no questions.
He was simply there.
Then Detective Chen called Professor Lawson.

The verdict was ready.
👉 Emma had rebuilt enough of her voice to testify—now the law would decide whether Rebecca’s voice had survived too.
