Chapter 6 - THE SECOND COMPARTMENT
Detective Chen entered Rebecca’s townhouse before sunrise.
The visible entryway had been cleaned.
Bleach covered the tiles.
A rug had been removed.
But chemical tests revealed blood across the grout.
The pattern matched an assault, not a minor cut.
A broken piece from Emma’s jaw brace was found beneath a radiator.
Grant’s flashlight was missing from the utility drawer.
The safe stood open.
Every shelf had been emptied.
Lena and Grant believed they had removed Rebecca’s archive.
They had missed one thing.
Emma’s drawing had shown a square inside another square.
Daniel remembered Rebecca teaching Emma to draw hidden compartments when she was a child.
He pressed along the safe’s rear panel.
A second door opened.
Inside was a compact recorder, an original will, property deeds, and a sealed package labeled:
DANIEL HAYES — IF EMMA IS EVER HURT.
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
Rebecca had prepared the package eight years earlier.
The letter explained that Grant and Lena were diverting money.
Rebecca had discovered their affair.
She feared they might target Emma if she reported them.
She intended to contact Daniel directly.
But Daniel was deployed in a region with restricted communications.
Rebecca mailed one warning through military channels.
It never reached him.
The package contained a copy of the envelope.
Lena worked as a civilian coordinator in the support office that processed family correspondence.
She had intercepted it.
Daniel sat down in Rebecca’s study.
Every memory of meeting Lena changed.
She had approached him at a grief-support event.
She knew exactly what he feared.
Losing time with Emma.
Failing Rebecca as a co-parent.
Allowing deployment to make him absent.
Lena told him none of those things were his fault.
Then she slowly positioned herself between father and daughter.
When Emma complained that Lena monitored her accounts, Daniel called it concern.
When Emma said Grant and Lena spoke too often, Daniel dismissed it as estate business.
He had believed the person controlling information because she always delivered it calmly.
“I brought her into Emma’s life,” he whispered.
Detective Chen looked at him.
“You were deceived. What matters now is what you do with the truth.”
The recorder inside the second compartment contained Rebecca’s final interview with a private investigator.
She described Grant and Lena’s scheme.
She also mentioned a mechanic named Thomas Bell.
Thomas had found signs that someone loosened Rebecca’s steering assembly.
Rebecca paid him to preserve photographs.
Grant later claimed Thomas moved overseas.
Detective Chen searched national records.
Thomas had not moved overseas.
He entered witness protection under another financial-fraud case five years earlier.
He was alive.
And he still possessed Rebecca’s photographs.
At the hospital, doctors performed the first operation on Emma’s jaw.
Daniel waited outside the surgical unit.
Lena sent him seventeen messages.
She said Grant was being unfairly targeted.
She claimed Emma suffered from stress and might be confusing memories.
Daniel read every message.
Then he forwarded them to Detective Chen.
He removed Lena from his military emergency contacts.
Froze all joint accounts.
Changed every authorization.
And filed for an emergency protective order.
When Emma returned from surgery, Daniel sat beside her.
“I should have listened sooner.”
Emma’s swollen eyes filled with tears.
He did not ask her to forgive him.
He placed Rebecca’s sealed letter beside the bed.
“We found the second compartment.”
Emma moved one finger against his palm.

Daniel nodded.
