Chapter 7 - THE MECHANIC WHO NEVER DISAPPEARED
Thomas Bell agreed to speak only after Detective Chen confirmed that Grant and Lena were both under surveillance.
He had spent five years living under another name after testifying in a federal insurance-fraud case unrelated to Rebecca.
But Rebecca’s death had followed him into hiding.
Through a secure video call, Thomas described the morning she brought her car into his shop.
“The steering felt loose,” he said. “She thought something had worn out.”
It had not worn out.
Someone had removed a retaining bolt, partially loosened a steering linkage, and placed the damaged components back together so the failure would occur gradually.
“It was deliberate,” Thomas said. “Whoever did it understood vehicles.”
Grant had once worked in commercial property maintenance.
His employment records showed mechanical training.
Thomas photographed the damage before repairing it.
Rebecca asked him not to replace everything immediately.
She wanted the police to examine the car.
That evening, someone broke into the shop.
The photographs on Thomas’s office computer were deleted.
The original steering components disappeared.
Thomas still had backup copies on an external drive stored at his sister’s house.
He gave one set to Rebecca.
The following morning, she died before reaching the police.
“Why didn’t you come forward?” Daniel asked.
“I did.”
Thomas contacted the detective assigned to the accident.
The detective told him the steering system had been destroyed in the crash and his suspicions were speculation.
Two days later, Grant came to Thomas’s home.
“He said I had a daughter in college,” Thomas continued. “He knew her address.”
Thomas left the state.
Years later, when federal agents offered protection in another case, he disclosed Rebecca’s investigation.
But local authorities had already closed the file.
Detective Chen reopened it formally.
Thomas’s photographs showed tool marks matching the wrench set recovered from Grant’s garage.
One wrench contained a faint trace of lubricant used on Rebecca’s vehicle.
The evidence alone did not prove Grant caused the crash.
Then police examined the recorder from the safe’s second compartment.
Rebecca had captured a conversation in her kitchen.
Grant’s voice said, “You should have let the car teach you the lesson.”
Rebecca answered, “You touched the steering.”
Lena interrupted.
“She cannot prove that.”
Grant replied, “She won’t be around long enough to try.”
The audio continued with sounds of a struggle.
Rebecca had hidden the recorder before leaving for Daniel’s office.
She never reached him.
At the hospital, Emma’s surgery lasted nearly seven hours.
Surgeons placed metal plates along her shattered jaw.
She would be unable to speak normally for weeks.
But when Daniel explained that Thomas had been found, Emma squeezed his hand.
One movement.
Then she traced another word into his palm.
Phone.
Detective Chen believed Grant and Lena had destroyed it.
Emma shook her head.
She drew a cloud.
Professor Lawson understood.
“The phone backed up automatically.”
Cybersecurity staff accessed Emma’s encrypted cloud account under warrant.
The last audio file had uploaded moments before Grant struck the device away.
The recording captured everything inside the townhouse.
Lena demanding the drive.
Grant admitting they knew Rebecca’s safe existed.
The blow.
Then Lena’s voice after Emma collapsed.
“She looks dead.”
Grant answered, “Not yet.”
Daniel listened only until that sentence.
He stepped into the hallway before rage made him lose control.
Detective Chen continued listening.
The final minutes contained Grant and Lena discussing where to leave Emma and how to describe the attack.
Then Grant said something neither had mentioned before.
“If Daniel sees the amended will, we lose both estates.”
