Chapter 9 - THE BARN IN FLAMES
Elias mounted Copper and rode for the ranch.
Clara was too weak to follow.
Ruth and Aaron carried her into the hotel while three townsmen guarded Silas.
Mayor Vane insisted he had nothing to do with the fire.
No one trusted him enough to let him leave.
At the Mercer ranch, flames had already climbed one wall of the barn.
Elias found Wade Pike running toward the southern trail.
Copper recognized him.
The roan pinned his ears and blocked the narrow gate.
Wade tried to turn his horse, but Elias caught him.
Inside Wade’s saddlebag were matches, oil-soaked rags, and two hundred dollars signed out from Mayor Vane’s private account.
Ranch hands contained the fire before it reached the hidden compartment.
The metal box survived.
Back in town, Dr. Miriam Shaw examined Clara.
She had severe dizziness, bruised wrists, and damaged ankles but no broken bones.
“You were minutes from losing consciousness,” the doctor said.
Clara looked through the window.
People were gathering outside the hotel.
Some had participated in tying her.
Others had remained silent.
Now they wanted answers.
Clara wanted an apology.
Instead, she asked for paper.
With Ruth’s help, she printed Owen’s journal entry, the list of stolen farms, and a statement describing the frame-up.
Before sunset, copies were posted across town.
The same press Silas tried to seize now spread the truth faster than he could contain it.
Elias returned carrying the metal box.
Wade rode behind him with his hands tied.
Silas saw the box and lowered his head.
Mayor Vane continued denying everything.
He claimed Wade acted alone.
Then Clara opened the payment ledger.
Several entries used initials.
A.V. for Amos Vane.
S.C. for Silas Crowe.
W.P. for Wade Pike.
Payments corresponded with threats, false foreclosures, and the removal of boundary stones.
Still, one critical piece was missing.
The original survey map.
Without it, Vane could argue that Owen misunderstood the boundaries.
Clara aligned the two halves of the brass plate again.
The X pointed toward Red Hollow Cemetery.
Night had fallen.
Elias wanted to wait for morning.
Clara knew Vane’s remaining allies might already be moving.
They took lanterns and entered the cemetery.
Owen’s grave stood near the western wall.
The engraved X did not point to his grave.
It pointed to Thomas Mercer’s empty memorial marker.
Elias knelt.
Behind the stone was a narrow iron tube sealed with wax.
Inside they found the original survey map and a letter from Thomas.
He had written it on the night he witnessed Silas cutting Owen’s wagon brake.
Thomas planned to reach the territorial marshal.
The letter ended with a name Clara did not expect.
