Chapter 11 - THE TOWN THAT FINALLY STOOD UP

Elias wanted Clara moved to the Mercer ranch.

Clara refused.

“Running now tells everyone Silas still owns this town.”

“He nearly killed you once.”

“And he succeeded because everyone believed I was alone.”

Ruth rang the church bell.

Not as Silas had done.

This time, she called Red Hollow together to protect someone rather than punish her.

The townspeople gathered in the square before sunrise.

Clara stood on the hotel balcony, her ankles wrapped and her face still bruised.

She did not soften the truth.

“You watched Silas turn an accusation into a sentence,” she said. “Some of you tied the rope. Some shouted. Most did nothing.”

Several heads lowered.

“I will not pretend silence is innocence. But what happens next will decide whether Red Hollow remains his town or becomes yours again.”

Aaron Cole volunteered to guard the printing office.

Mateo Ruiz brought ranch hands to protect the road.

The widow whose home had been taken offered her cellar as a safe place for the documents.

Even the driver who raised the switch beside Copper stepped forward.

His name was Samuel Doss.

Silas had threatened to take his freight license if he refused.

“I should have refused anyway,” Samuel said.

Clara did not immediately forgive him.

But she allowed him to help.

Search parties formed.

Elias and Copper followed Silas’s trail toward Blackstone Canyon.

The hoofprints ended near Owen’s original wagon route.

They found Silas’s horse wandering without a rider.

A fresh trail led down toward the canyon floor.

Elias dismounted.

Copper refused to enter one narrow passage.

The horse backed away and stared at the rocks.

Elias found a length of wire stretched ankle-high between two boulders.

Silas had set a trap.

Beyond it were three armed men.

The confrontation ended without gunfire when Red Hollow ranchers surrounded the canyon from above.

Two men surrendered.

The third fled.

Silas was not with them.

One captive revealed Silas planned to reach the abandoned rail depot.

A private train carrying Mayor Vane’s company money would pass before noon.

Silas intended to escape with the cash and the original company ledgers stored aboard.

Those ledgers could prove the full scale of the fraud.

Clara realized something else.

If Silas destroyed them, many families might never recover their land.

Elias rode back toward town.

But Clara was already preparing a wagon.

“You are not coming,” he said.

“Those records include Owen’s work. I can identify them.”

“You can barely stand.”

“I stood upside down in that square and still told the truth.”

Elias knew argument would not stop her.

Copper carried Clara again.

This time, half the town rode with them.

👉 Silas expected one rancher and an injured widow, but the crowd he once controlled was now coming to bring him back.
