Chapter 5 - THE KNIFE AT THE MERCER RANCH

Elias took Clara to the Mercer ranch before sunrise.

His home stood on a ridge overlooking open grassland and a narrow cottonwood valley.

Inside, he opened a locked cabinet.

A leather sheath rested on the top shelf.

It was empty.

“That belonged to Thomas,” Elias said.

The matching knife had a silver handle carved with a running horse.

Thomas carried it everywhere.

After he disappeared, Elias found the empty sheath near Blackstone Canyon.

He had always believed Thomas lost the knife during a struggle.

Three days earlier, the sheath had vanished from the cabinet.

“Who knew it was here?” Clara asked.

“Silas. Mayor Vane. Two ranch hands.”

One ranch hand was visiting family in Abilene.

The other, Wade Pike, had disappeared during the night.

Elias searched Wade’s bunkhouse.

His clothing was gone.

Under the bed, Clara found a train schedule and twenty dollars in new banknotes.

The money bore sequential serial numbers.

The town relief fund had received a shipment of identical notes that week.

Someone had paid Wade to leave.

In the stable, Copper became restless near Wade’s empty stall.

The roan pinned his ears and pawed the ground.

Elias examined the stall door.

A dark streak marked the wood.

“Oil,” he said.

The scent matched the heavy gun oil Silas used on his pistol.

Silas had been inside the stable.

That afternoon, Clara visited the town clerk’s office pretending to research old advertisements.

While the clerk searched a cabinet, Clara noticed a map on the wall.

A small crescent had been drawn north of Mercer land.

She memorized the position.

Then Silas entered.

He closed the office door.

“You have mistaken Elias Mercer’s anger for protection,” he said.

“He has more reason to trust me than you do.”

“His brother vanished. Your husband died. Now you spend your days searching for a connection because loneliness feels better when it has an enemy.”

Clara stood.

“I know about the boundary stones.”

Silas’s eyes shifted toward the wall map.

The movement lasted less than a second.

It was enough.

Clara stepped past him.

Silas caught her wrist.

“Go home, Mrs. Bennett.”

“This is my home.”

“Not for much longer.”

He released her when the clerk returned.

That evening, Elias and Clara followed the crescent location from memory.

They found a collapsed mine entrance hidden by brush.

Inside was part of Owen’s brass printing plate.

It had been broken in two.

The engraved lines matched the valley.

Behind a loose rock, Clara discovered a small metal box.

The box contained copies of land deeds and a page from Owen’s journal.

Before she could read it, footsteps echoed at the mine entrance.

A lantern appeared in the darkness.

Silas’s voice followed.

“You should have taken the money.”

👉 Clara and Elias had found Owen’s missing evidence, but Silas had trapped them underground before they could escape with it.
