Thomas’s memory returned in fragments.
Judge Sloan arranged for him to give testimony privately with a physician present.
He described finding Silas beneath Owen’s wagon outside the survey office.
Silas held Thomas’s silver knife.
He used it to cut through the leather brake strap.
Thomas confronted him.
Silas attacked and fled with the knife.
Thomas warned Owen, but the surveyor believed he could still reach Fort Griffin using another wagon.
Mayor Vane’s men replaced it with the sabotaged one.
Thomas followed when he realized the switch.
At Blackstone Canyon, the brake failed.
Owen fought the reins, but the wagon went over the edge.
Thomas climbed down.
Owen was alive for several minutes.
He gave Thomas a packet containing the original map and told him to find Margaret Vane.

Margaret produced copied bank records, letters, and a signed confession Amos had written after she threatened to expose him.
In the confession, Vane admitted authorizing intimidation and fraudulent property transfers.
He blamed Silas for Owen’s death.
Silas blamed Vane.
Neither could escape responsibility.
The territorial trial lasted twelve days.
Clara testified about Owen’s journal, the mine fire, the planted money, and the public punishment.
The defense asked why the crowd would have believed her guilty if Silas’s evidence was weak.
Clara looked toward several townspeople seated in the gallery.
“Because fear makes a lie easier to repeat than the truth is to defend.”
Thomas identified Silas as the man who cut Owen’s brake.
Aaron presented the broken knife fragment.
A metalworker confirmed it fit the missing tip exactly.
Margaret testified against her husband.
The black ledger supported every major accusation.
The jury convicted Silas of murder, attempted murder, fraud, theft, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy.
Amos Vane was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, land theft, obstruction, and responsibility for Owen’s death.
Wade received a reduced sentence after admitting his role and cooperating.
Judge Sloan sentenced Silas and Vane to territorial prison.
Then she turned to the matter of Clara’s punishment.
Red Hollow itself could not be imprisoned.
