Chapter 9

The MPs moved in.

Maddox jerked backward.

“Get your hands off me.”

Price turned him around.

The metal click of restraints was soft.

But it sounded louder than the tray hitting the floor.

Maddox was marched toward the door.

Every soldier watched.

No one cheered.

They did not need to.

Justice did not always arrive with applause.

Sometimes it arrived with silence.

And a man finally realizing no one was afraid of him anymore.

At the doorway, Maddox twisted his head back.

His eyes found Rachel one last time.

“You think this is over?”

Rachel met his stare.

“For you, yes.”

Then he was gone.

The cafeteria doors swung shut behind him.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Food still stained the floor.

Water still spread around Rachel’s shoes.

The broken spoon remained near her hand.

Then Private Miles Harper stepped forward.

He looked embarrassed, shaken, and grateful all at once.

“Ma’am…”

Rachel softened.

“You don’t have to call me that.”

He swallowed.

“I should’ve said something sooner.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. He made sure you believed you couldn’t.”

Miles looked down.

“My dad told me the Army would make me stronger.”

Rachel glanced around the room.

“It still can.”

She bent down and picked up the broken spoon.

Then she placed it on the ruined tray.
