Chapter 8

Maddox pointed at Miles.

“You. Tell them I never locked you out.”

Miles trembled.

His lips parted.

Everyone turned toward him.

Maddox’s eyes burned into him.

“Say it.”

Miles could barely breathe.

Rachel did not push him.

She simply said, “Private Harper, you are safe.”

Those four words broke something open.

Miles stood slowly.

His voice shook.

“He locked me out for six hours.”

Maddox’s head snapped toward him.

“You lying little—”

Price grabbed Maddox by the shoulder.

“Enough.”

Miles kept going, tears filling his eyes.

“It was raining. I asked to come inside. He said if I died from being soft, the Army would be better off.”

The cafeteria stayed silent.

Then Corporal Reeves stood.

“He shoved me during combatives after I tapped out.”

Specialist Lane stepped forward next.

“He told me if I reported the missing kits, he’d make sure I never worked medicine again.”

One by one, voices rose.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just honest.

The kind of truth that had been trapped too long.

Rachel stood in the center of it all, listening.

Maddox tried one last time.

He looked at Rachel with pure hatred.

“You set me up.”

Rachel looked at the tray on the floor.

“No, Sergeant. I gave you a choice.”

Her voice dropped.
